Police: Woman Orders Dogs To Attack Sheriff's Deputy

MELBOURNE -- A sheriff's deputy in Brevard County, Fla., who was attempting to serve a warrant, shot and killed a dog that was ordered by its owner to attack, according to authorities.

Police said the incident happened about 1 p.m. in the county portion of Melbourne along Carlton Street.

The sheriff's deputies were trying to serve the warrant when a confrontation with the dog's owner ensued, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported. The sheriff's deputies then called the Melbourne police for backup when several dogs lunged toward them.

"She sent the dogs after the deputies," spokeswoman for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office Yvonne Martinez said.

One of the dogs was killed with four shots from a deputy's gun. Christine Young then ran off in a wooded area behind a Cumberland Farms convenience store and was later taken into custody.

"The sheriff's office called for our assistance and by the time we got out there it was over," said Sgt. Lou Markline of the Melbourne police department.

Lets see how long it takes for everyone to side with the dogowner, and say that the warrant was a violation of her rights, and the dog was only doing what its meant to do.....the police surely cant be right in this one:rolleyes:

"There's not enough information here."

"There's obviously parts to this story that we're not hearing."

:D

You don't believe everything the media says do you?? :p

Everyone?

There are plenty of middle-of-the-road posters on the police-use-of-force threads that I have visited. You don't do your cause any favors by adopting the us-vs-them mentality.

Good shoot, again. I woulda done the same thing...

seriously guys, I hope the cop bashing doesn't happen here. This was definately justifyable

The deputy and his department both need sued, immediately, for risking unnecessary harm to the public! Had they been using .357 SIG it only would've taken ONE shot to drop the dog instead of four. Obviously the department has issued substandard 9mm or .40 S&W to its deputies. By negligently issuing substandard ammo and thereby forcing deputies to shoot more than would otherwise be necessary, they are creating an excessive risk to the public!

:neener:

We've got to get those evil assault dogs off the streets before they kill someone!

My thoughts exactly. There is no reason you need anything bigger than a pekinese to hunt with. Anything bigger has no legitimate sporting use.

That's true, It's not the dogs fault it was the owner that used them to attack the officers. To bad for the dogs, but they are at least as deadly as a gun wielding felon and I'd shoot too.

The charge would be assault with a deadly weapon if history is any indication

Anybody that has ever been in Melbourne would never question the voracity of the story

Well, you can wait around if you want, but it looks like it might be quite a while .... :p

I certainly wouldn't hesistate to kill a dog if I thought it was a genuine threat to me, my family, or my livestock.
