Looking to sell my arsenal slr106fr for a polish tantal in 5.45 or hung amd65 in 7.62x39. Centerfiresystems has both in stock $499 and $399 respectively.

Both are centuryarms made and do not have chrome line barrel. My question is how are these rifles and how accurate/reliable are these?

Good bang for the buck or stay away?

We've sold a couple of each over the past 3 months - no complaints from the purchasers. One customer that bought a Tantal swore that he could shoot less than 2" groups all day - not sure of distance he was talking about - and he does have a tendency to exagerate - but then... Hands on, side-by-side comparison with the Romarm/Century WASR-10s - both the Tantals and the AMD showed better fit and finish - no mag wobble. The prices you quote above must be dealer prices.

Heard of over sized bore problems with the tantal. Only problem with amd is mags over 20 rounds tend to get interfered with by the front grip.

Why would you be selling an Arsenal to get anything by Century ? And a non-chome-lined one,at that ? I'd stand pat.
The tantal uses ammo that isn't manufactured in the states, so expect it to soon get very expensive, then disappear forever.
Classicarms sells the AMD for another $60-80 or so, I believe, but it's chrome-lined ( i believe)and they ain't "built" by century ( I belive).

I would be all over that tantal, what with the cost of 545 right now, plus they are excellent quality. and yeah, they are accurate pieces...

just bought a tantal, and a lot of cheap 545. I wouldn't worry about the lack of a chrome lining. It is my understanding that the chrome lining is primarily for preserving the barrel from heat damage in full auto firing circumstances. I may bumpfire every now and then, but I don't plane on routinely getting my rifle so hot that it corrodes with a highly accelerated rate.

Anyway, how hard is it to put a new barrel on the rifle years down the road?

Just my .02 cents.

probably wouldnt be to concerned about whether the barrel was chrome lined are not, while chrome lined are long lasting most are not going to put enough rounds through there guns to wear out a barrel. and since barrels have been banned for import with parts kits your probably going to see many more ak variant rifles built with out chrome lined barrels.
you might try calling center fire or other companys and asking them specifically, as you may find one with a chrome lined bore in there stock.

Some century Tantals have reports of keyholing.

I am pretty sure you will get a worse gun by selling an arsenal and buying a century. If there is something wrong with your arsenal, I would send it in and get it worked on under warranty.

just swapping out an all black ak with a more traditional with wood furniture.

purchased the amd today, still deciding if i should go tantal or bulgarian with blonde wood.

It is my understanding that the chrome lining is primarily for preserving the barrel from heat damage in full auto firing circumstances.
The chrome lining actually offers a lot of advantages:

-Much stronger corrosion resistance
-More resistance to physical wear (harder surface)
-Easier to clean

The lack of a chromed bore is not a show-stopper, but it's worth considering.

If you don't like the furniture with the 106, you could buy a bulgy triangle folder and then swap it with the original folder and then find some wood to get a more traditional ak-74 look. But after the swap you would have to then make 922 compliant though. K-var is selling their bulgy side folder for $72.
I love my 106fr!
Plus, .223 ammo will always be available in a wide variety of loads and the cost might lower eventually, but maybe I'm being too optimistic!
Oh, and good luck with your decision!

Go get the AMD and keep the gun you have now.
The AMD's are on sale this weekend, down to $350.
That's a SMOKEN DEAL!!!!!!

Is it possible to swap out that hideous wire stock on the Tantal for something more traditional like a regular wood stock?

yup, thats how much I got my AMD for. I guess I will get the polish tantal next, then yugo m70 underfolder

Golden Hound: yes, it is possible. I asked folks in gun shop to do it for me, and they put in a Warsaw Pact plastic stock in 5 minutes. P.S. I type too slow...

yongxingfreesty: I have a Century that I got 3 months ago. It is true that some of their rifles had oversized bore that lead to keyholing; a true prevalence of problem is, of course, known to Century only. From buyer's prospective, I guess it is hit or miss. See if you can make an agreement with seller to have them deal with this if issue arose. The bore is not chrome-lined; I personally find this a non-issue, but you may feel differently. My personal rifle is 100% reliable, doesn't keyhole, and the best group I got was 3" at 100 yards. Century is reported to have good customer service. Tantal has a fair amount of proprietary parts - handguards, for example; if you plan to mount a light or RDS, this can present a problem. The ambi safety works well from "fire" to "safe", but not the other way around. I know nothing of AMD. Hope this helps.

im hoping i get a good one, is there anyway to tell which ones have oversized bores? barrel markings? production date?

Thanks

Not sure of bbl markings - this rifle is not with me right now. I am not even sure if there are markings. The serial # on mine is TTL018xx, if this helps at all. Maybe, give Century a call beforehand?

thanks for the tips, will have to hold off then. if keyholing occurs, that would make my day go really bad.

but look at the tantal, its freaking beautiful.

anyone know if the hungarian amd-65 or polish tantal comes with a tapco g2 set?

will the tapco g2 fit both rifles? do I need a single hook or double hook?

thanks

yongxingfreesty, the Tapco G2 fits all AKs.

Century started using the Tapco G2 exclusively over 2 years ago. If Century built 'em, they should have G2s in 'em.

The deal with Tantal barrels is that the Century guns use an American-made unit that may or may not be over-bore, depending on who you talk to. The alternative is an original Polish military barrel, chrome-lined, as used in the guns put together by an outfit called High Standard and sold by Atlantic Firearms, among others. Currently the Atlantic web site shows both wire-folder and fixed-stock Tantals with the Polish barrel for $619.
