Continuing my series of poor man's products is the poor man's holster! It is also know as the OSS holster. It was used in WWII by the OSS as a way to carry a handgun without a real holster. It is simply a loop of twine or string or shoelace of varying length.

The way it works is, you thread one end of the loop under your belt and one end over it. Now you have two smaller loops that should be on top of the belt with one end being a smaller loop than the other. You then place the bbl of your gun in the smaller loop and the larger end of the loop holds the frame area of the gun. The you just put the gun inside your wasteband like "Mexican carry" but it is prevented from falling down your pants by the loops attached to your belt.

The reason that the OSS used this was that they could ditch the gun if they were being trailed and the "holster" could be kept in the pocket. If caught, the holster would not give away the operative. This was before the advent of the clip on holster or the paddle holster.

I have used this holster on several guns when I wanted to carry "Mexican" style but also wanted to prevent the gun from slipping down my pants. It works O.K. but not on guns that have a front sight that will snag on the loop. If it snags, it will still draw but the loop will be hanging around the bbl. On guns like the 1911 or the BHP it works fine. On my Ruger MK II, it snagged. I carried the MK II this way because I wanted to keep a .22 pistol on me when hunting or just hiking but I didn't have a holster that fit.

The good thing about this holster is that it is free and it can be made to fit any size handgun with just adjusting the size of the loop. What you don't want to do is make a single loop with it attached to your belt, if you do this, when the gun snags, it will not pull loose.

I am not recomending this holster but I thought it was an interesting idea. If it works for you, great. If you don't like this idea, don't blame me, I didn't invent it. Also I have heard it may not be legal in some states.

I've seen shooting systems holsters for $39.95....

I'd get it in a pinch but I'd still prefer Milt Sparks or something like it in leather.

Poor man's? You own more guns than I do Firestar ;) Thanks for sharing the OSS loop info. It works very well.

"Holster" in my book implies "covering the trigger", so the OSS loop wouldn't cut the mustard for me. That said, the OSS loop sounds like a convenient way to Mexican carry without worrying about the gun falling down your pants.

The ultimate cheap-o: Plastic milk jug!

I fashioned a couple of temporary pocket holsters from the thin plastic that gallon milkjugs are made of. With a little duct tape, I get a holster that can be modified to fit any pocket, is slick on the draw, is extremely light, and very flat for better concealment. Sounds crazy but it works for me.

An old cop trick (from an old cop's son) is putting a couple of rubber bands on the grips. The rubber bands stop the gun from sliding down your pants.

Poor men can't afford Uncle Mike's holsters.:D Real poor men would use a piece of twine, milk jug or tree bark to make their poor man's holster.:D :D :D

Rubber bands on grip

The Deputy who taught my carry class had a front who used the rubber bands on the grip method. He used it until he was traveling down an escalator and his pistol slid down the inside of his pant leg, bounced all the way down the escalator stairs and slid along the floor.

I think of that story every time I consider Mexican carry.

Let me take a shot at that "Mexican carrry"

Pistol simply stuck in waist band of trousers, often right in front with the barrel pointing directly at the wearer's "essentials." No holster, no clips, rubber bands, or anything else. Just da gun.

In a leather holster, the best deal I've found is the "JIT" from Don Hume. It's a strong-side open top made of quality cowhide and retails for about $21.00.

Not your "one-size-sort-of-fits-all" rig. They're model-specific and molded to the weapon. Fit and finish are extremely nice, especially for the money. Very practical CCW holster for a bargain price, and IDPA-legal.

For Kydex, I like the Fobus line-especially the paddle rigs. The only gripe that I have with them is that they don't offer enough LH options. If they'd come out with LH paddles for the Mak and the CZ 75, I'd buy two more. My 1911 rig works equally well with my full-size 1911, Springfield Champion, or Para C7.45 and has held up well to hard use.

Don't forget the Duct Tape and chewing gum, MacGyver!

:D :neener:

I am not a true poor man but I do play one on T.V.:D I don't use the O.S.S. loop holster but I would in a pinch if I needed it.

Almost anyone that can afford a gun can afford a holster. It was just an interesting bit of info I had in my head that I thought others might find interesting. I enjoy it when others share this type of info that may save me some money or make my life a little easier so that was my intend, as well as to inform as entertain.

The fact is, a good holster is worth it weight in gold. A good holster can make a heavy gun feel like it isn't even there and also keep it right where you want it until you need it. I am not a fan of Mexican carry but I will use it if I don't have a holster handy. Mexican carry has some advantages and some drawbacks, you just got to know the limitation of such a carry. I wouldn't use Mexican carry if I was planning to be out for many hours and be doing lots of activities but if your just going to get some gas down the road, it isn't a bad idea to have a gun and most people won't bother to take a gun if they have to get a belt and a holster and strap it on. I will either take a small gun that will fit in my pocket or Mexican carry a larger gun. If the holster is an IWB with a clip, it sort of solves all those problems and I will take it.

Didn't you see the "Jamaican Holster" thread? You have holsters for the making hanging in your closet!
