Pre '64 Model 70 question...

I have been searching for a pre '64 Model 70 and finally found a 30.06 standard rifle (manufactured in 1958) that was advertised as being in new, unfired condition. The rifle arrived to me today and checks out as advertised as far as I can tell. However, the safety won't move from the fire position. Any suggestions on what may be wrong here would be appreciated. This is the first Model 70 I have owned. Thanks in advance. Art G.

Probably just dirt or dried grease .......take it out of stock and clean it good. Congrats, IMO, you have the finest rifle ever made!
I have a sizeable collection of these.....1952 and 1953's......LOVE every one of them!

Hmmmm, have you worked the bolt? The safety is designed to engage when the striker is cocked. Sometimes you can adjust the trigger so far that the striker will not engage with the sear and you end up with the striker in a rest position each time. Most likely it was adjusted improperly by a prior owner or by the factory (less likely). Hard to describe the feel, but if you can dry-fire the gun, this isn't the problem. You have to have the gun cocked IIRC to engage the safety.

Gun cocks and dry fires fine. Only problem is that the safety will not move from the fire position. Art G.
