My grandfather owns a pre-64 Winchester 70 but does not have a bolt for it. Apparently he removed the bolt and placed it in a sock as a method of keeping it "safe" when he had kids in the house. The sock has been missing for years. For his birthday I wanted to get him a new bolt. As far as I can tell I cannot find a pre-64 bolt completed but I can find parts. Would it make more sense to build one? Where should I look for help on this?

If the bolt gets replaced, you should have a gunsmith check it for proper headspacing.

I found one that came from a .270 caliber rifle. My grandpa's is a .30-06, are they interchangeable?

You are very lucky.

Wisner's was the only source for pre 64 M70 parts. I was able to get a new bolt and firing pin from them prior to the old man retiring. These parts had to be gunsmith fitted with a lathe and milling machine as they were oversized. The Son who has taken over the business is not making these parts anymore. http://www.wisnersinc.com/

A 270 bolt is 100% interchangeable if it headspaces correctly. You must find someone with headspace gages to determine that the headspace is between "Go" and "No-Go". These pre 64's are file to fit guns so there may be issues with the safety and sear engagement.

Post 64, Classic M70, and FN 70 bolts will not fit. You loose this bolt and you are up the creek without a paddle.

Thanks Slamfire,

I did find that website and you are right, they do not make them any more. I was about to ask about the post 64 bolts but you were one step ahead of me. I will make sure to get the rifle over to a gunsmith before giving it to my grandpa.

Thanks for all the advice,

-Alex
