Pretty as a picture

I've been messing around with photography for a few years now. My job affords me the luxury of being able to purchase some decent equipment. It doesn't take much of a camera to take great pictures. But quality equipment can make up for some technical inadequacies. I've noticed that many of the marginal pictures taken are out of focus and poorly composed. It is possible to take very good pictures with a cell phone but a DSLR can really make your work pop. Even a lot of the new point and shoots are excellent choices.

My most recent setup is a Nikon D7000 and several lenses. It was purchased as an upgrade to a Nikon D60 which is a very good camera in it's own right. I think for $400-$600 anyone can own a nice DSLR.

My point and shoot on the other hand is a $200 Canon that takes very usable pictures. If done properly the pictures it creates gives a DSLR a run for it's money.

I guess my point is this.....decent light, good focus, good composition and a quality camera can take great pictures. The above photos are all excellent and are a testament to the folks taking them.

I don't give much attention to photographing my guns. Maybe someday I'll set up a little area where I can get every detail.

My true passion is animal photography. It's very challenging.

But I will take a picture of just about anything........

non-direct sunlight, or just soft even lighting.

try to not have anything in the background that will distract the viewer from the focal point. also try to get the focal point to take up 2/3rds of the total image. that way it fills the screen but isn't overpowering the shot.

practice, practice, practice.

CraigC - your SAA photo is a beauty...>

The lighting shows off the metal very well and your touch of work on the grips appears to have worked well. A very pleasing image.

HGUNHNTR - I assure you this is a true and accurate "in action" shot showing exactly how firearms and ammunition work, even down to the "BLAM!!!" that appears as the pistol is fired.

Thanks.
