Price Check.1924 Colt 1911A1 Commercial

I found an old Colt commercial model 1911a1 for sale. The serial number (C131xxx) indicates that it was made in 1924, and it looks as though only 5000 were made that year. It is all there mechanically, and does not appear to have been fired much. The slide to frame fit is good and the locking lugs are nice and square. The grips are not original and the bluing is in the 80% range. There is no rust or pitting, and looks to be in nice overall shape.

How much do you guys think that this 1911 is worth. I know that it’s hard to tell with out pictures, but I am not really familiar with the commercial models.

In NJ hard to say. I'd give $1200 in a New York minute. I've seen such at close to 2K however.

Commercial Colt

Allowing for the non-original grips...for which there are repros available for about 20 bucks, by the way...and the 80% give/take finish...you're probably lookin' at somewhere between the 1,000-1200 dollar range, assuming that it's in serviceable shape mechanically. You may be surprised to find that the gun
will feed hollowpoints as easily as hardball, and is likely a very good shooter, accuracy-wise. I wouldn't shoot it a lot, though. The steel in the slide, frame, and barrel weren't heat-treated that far back. For occasional/medium use and carry, it's probably good to go.

Thanks. I know that the old colts are shooters. I have a WWII vintage that shoout just as well as some modern 1911's.

I have learned from hard experience that it's better to research guns you might be interested in before you find one, rather then find it and then start asking questions. On too many ocasions someone who "knew what it was" showed up before I could get back...
