I didn't vote because although they are all true to some extent the bottom line is I just plain enjoy shooting and what I do doesn't hurt anybody so why not?
I own firearms because it is my expression of freedom.
I have a safe full of guns that have been shot less than 20 times. . .but by Golly I am free to have as many as I jolly well want.
Sure, I hunt, I enjoy blasting at cans on a Sunday afternoon, I carry one every day for protection, I've got some that are purely for collecting. . .but mostly it is just because I *can*, and very few people in the world have that freedom.
I would say my primary reason would be recreation, since I have never needed a gun for self-defence or tyranny and it will stay the primary until needbe.
Like some others have said, I own a gun because it's my right to defend myself and my freedom. My parents fled Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge took over. I think it would have been different there if everyone had a gun.
My second reason for owning a gun is in a SHTF scenario. We get quite a few hurricanes in NC. I'd want to be able to protect myself from idiots and kill food if I'm hungry.
I own many guns because I enjoy tinkering and shooting.
i'm self employed. i sit in front of a computer at home. All The Time. now, i didn't want to invest in golf clubs and don't have a desire to learn the game. i don't need an opponent to go to the indoor shooting range. and i can start or finish any time i choose, in all kind of weather, all year round. and when the weather's bad that's the time i especially need to get out of the house. in the summer i can always go dig in the back yard or something.
some might disagree, but i also think guns are way cooler than golf clubs.
as for defense, i don't keep the gun loaded at home (well, usually have a magazine full of hollow points nearby though). i've never had a break in here. and if i did, i've got a really big axe. and a big hammer. and a couple baseball bats.
and there is that piece of paper with the big no.2 amendment on it in DC that says God has given us the right to defend ourselves and our national security.
I'd say my primary reason is for recreation but I also own them for protection. However, I'm much more likely to be shooting at the range than using it in a self-defense situation. I do have my CPL and will be carrying more often very shortly.
vote for defense, although all others apply except hunting, break out the ole' stick n' string for most of that.love pistol and long range rifle shooting aswell.
I do most shooting at paper but it is all because I want the animal to die fast, and following blood trails plain sucks. Hitting a grapefruit at 150 yards is good for other suff too, and 20 rd. mags "may" be overkill, but there wasn't a place to vote "because I can." Being 6'3 200 lb. with 2 loud dogs that total the same means self-defense isn't too big a concern, but I can leave the buckshot 12 next to the bed. And they are fun
