Can anyone tell me from experience or otherwise if I can safely use small pistol primers for magnum loads in my normal loads or is it dangerous or unsafe?

Back your powder charge down to about half way between minimum & maximum then start to work up until you have the load you want. If you do not have a Chrono then stagger a factory, reload, factory reload. When they feel the same & bullet impact is the same you are in business.

As said above, just do your normal "workup" as you would when you change any component. I've found in handgun rounds you generally use .1 to .2gr less powder with a Magnum primer when it's used in place of a standard primer. That's not much powder and if your normal load is nowhere near the Max charge you will have no problem at all with a Magnum primer. Most people think it's a lot more of a difference, it's not but never take a chance, do the workup...

What we talking about koolmfr2000, 357mag?
Generally I don't use a magnum type pistol primer unless it is called for, with ball powders like w296. And even then they may not be nessisary anyway.
Winchester small pistol primers are suited to both standard and magnum loadings.
If your at a max load just back it off abit and re-work up like has already been mentioned.

Are you asking if you can replace magnum primers with NON magnum primers?
If so I would say YES. You should use magnum primers with powders like 296 or H110, but you can bet your sweet pea that they will go bang with a non magnum! I've shot many 296 loads in my 44 mag using non magnums. My chrono shows that I get about 30 to 40 FPS less average using non magnum primers. I would also say that you can use non magnum without working up to where you are now with magnum ones. If you are replaceing non magnum with magnum then reduce by 5 % and work back up.

I would always use SP Magnum primers with any ball powder such as 110 or 296and back off slightly and work up if the manual didn't recommend the magnum primer. Another point to consider is the magnum primer will give a much hotter flash for hard to ignite powders when shooting or hunting in extremly cold weather.

Koolmfr2000. The (or one of the) problems with these kind of web sites is that people chime in with their grandiose advice and they haven't a clue of what they are talking about They give sage advice with little or no information at all. Now I know you are new here and we need all the new people we can get, but you MUST give all the tech information you have at your finger tips. The real experts will gladly give you answers to what you need if they have that information.

Remo-99, are you sure about that? Large Winchester pistol primers are for standard or magnum, but Winchester small pistol primers are standard only. They sell the standard and the magnum separately. The boxes of Winchester spp that I have all say standard on them. The large say standard or magnum.

No I'm not, but for some reason I had winchester LPP's on my mind, though we were discussing SPP's.

Winchester also, or did, make Small pistol standard/magnum primers. I have a few left in my supplies...
Look at the primer recommended by the maker of the powder you are using for the cartridge you are loading. If you are using 296 in a .357, what does Winchester say about 296 in a .357 and primers? If Winchester says magnum primers then use magnum primers.

I answered from MY experince (you can SAFELY use, but may NOT be BEST to use)and I give facts on FPS to back that up! I wish I had pressure measuring equipment, if so I would have provided PSI too! Like I stated DO NOT go from Standard to Magnum without reducing by 5%!
What I hate about these open ended questions.... is just that, they are open ended!
Like ...What is the best Gun for Deer? That question could be answered with anything from a .223 to a 700 Nitro Express! Please give some details about whatever it is that you're asking!
