I didn't actually give her the shotgun after she said she didnt know how to use it I just told her to stay in the room, which or course she didnt listen to.

Call cops, and cover front door. If you can see vehicle, give description to cops so they can stop him and shake him down (probable cause) should they see his vehicle (matching description) leaving the area. :)

What exactly are y'all suggesting he call the cops for?

I'm imagining how this phone call might go...

"Hello, 911. Please state the nature of your emergency."

"Well, someone rang my doorbell. And then they waited to see if anyone would answer! And then when no one answered, they rang the doorbell again!"

"Okay..."

Be cautious? Sure. Put up a sign saying the previous tenant has "moved on"? Sure. Calling the police because of behaviour that is perfectly normal, save for the hour of the day? Maybe not so great. After all, the guy did just go away after he didn't get an answer.

As for those suggesting he shoot the guy just for ringing the doorbell early in the morning, seriously, folks. This is the High Road. Let's not be our own worst enemies.

You should've told him the updated information through the door.

Instead of waiting with a gun ready to shoot in case he broke in, everybody would've been better off if you asked who he was and that the dealer no longer lives there.

Basically, you should've made it so that he didn't even have to resort to breaking in.

I wouldn't have called the cops if it was just the first time that he was acting mildly suspicious outside your place (i.e. hanging around waiting for you to answer the door); you don't want to get a reputation of crying wolf. If he started doing more aggressive stuff (banging constantly on the door, snooping in the windows, trying to jimmy stuff and whatnot) then I would be dialing the police. As others have said the guy was probably looking to pick up some drugs; the sign should let the previous tenant's clientele know he isn't around.

having been an apartment manager in INdianapolis, and being a person who can spot one who is looking for trouble< I have given the person a warning through the door. I noted the vehicle make model and plate number and time. The next time it happened I called the police on the non emergency number and gave them the info over the phone and the next day I spoke with a drug enforcement person who was very useful ( If you know what I mean). I had situations come up that requires imediate police intervention and there were those that didn't require immediate attention but DID need the police to be aware of. like a tenant who was in possesion of stolen property most of the time. Or a tenant who grew and sold from the apartment. Police agencies can do aolt IF you talk to the right division / Department AT THE RIGHT TIME. Using the most effective weapon Good Common sense. BTW NEVER EVER LEAVE CASH out and call in a repair person or maintenance worker. Don't leave it in an envelope on a desk PUT it in a safe or in your pocket ! Many Mainance people are very professional but some are no more than oppertunistic theives. From my experiences.

Glad the consensus was not to call the cops...the only reason I didnt try and talk through the door and tell him the old tenet moved out was because I was kinda out of it since it was 4 in the morning and all and I just felt safer observing the guy and seeing what he was up to. From my own prior experiences it is best to watch and wait since someone ringing your door bell repeatedly at that time of the day may be trying to determine if there is anyone at home prior to trying to break in. In that case I would rather catch said individual in the act after calling the police and put a stop to that kind of activity from happening in the future by making him or his friends wonder if anyone is really home even if no one answers the door. I would have had a hard time trying to converse with this guy through the door anyway with the dog barking her head off like she was. Like I said before if it were a normal time of day I would have just opened the door and informed the person that the old tenet has moved out similar to how I did a couple days before this night. I am not really overly paranoid but I do watch out for red flags and if you knew me, you would know that someone ringing the bell at 4 in the morning is a BIG red flag and definitely not someone I know. oh and by the way I would never shoot someone unless it was the last possible option to avoid my g/f or I being killed or severely injured by that person, so ringing the bell at 4am doesn't qualify for all you "shoot 'em where he stands" folks.
