Gents,

Some of you may know my "Break my P2000" thread from over at HKPRO. Well, I decided to do the same to my new SIG 556. I plan to shoot 200 rounds a week through it until something breaks, keeping up with all the details along the way. Also, since this is a, relativly speaking, new weapon, I will be logging in any modifications and accesory info I have.

Here she is now...

.

After waiting more than a year, I finally got my SIG 556. Now begins its destruction!! I picked up some federal ammo, and will begin destroying it this weekend.

On Friday I ran 100 rounds of Federal Ball trough it without a hitch. I have an Aimpoint on a Cantilever.

On Sunday I ran another 120 rounds through it. 40 rounds of Federal, 60 rounds of Monarch Brass and 20 rounds of WWB. I had to turn the gas setting to run the Monarch, but otherwise it functioned fine.

I used my Aimpoint M3 and magnifier. This is such a nice combo. If you have multiple rifles, the magnifier and Aimpoint combo is hard to beat.

I have ordered a Larue fixed BUIS and a Samson front sight. I am looking forward to toying with them. Although, I think the magnifier may be out if I use the fixed BUIS. Hmmm. I can always switch the folding BUIS off my M&P.

I plan on running the SIG just like I have my P2000. For the first 1000 or so rounds I will clean it regularly. After that, I will probably try for 5000 rounds intervals. I know that will void my warranty, and I don’t care. I want to wring this baby out! I will be taking (realistic) torture test suggestions!

WoW

Um Greg, may I say you are a SICK SICK MAN!
Beautiful toy... I hope you've got her sister at home to keep you company when you break her...

go ahead and break it and then get an AR15, or an AK47 underfolder.......something reliable. :uhoh:

A: running same mags and ammo as AR15.......ergo no plus

B: far more expensive than Ar15............ergo no plus

C: parts more expensive and infinitely less available than AR..........ergo no plus

D: not as modular as an AR15..................ergo no plus

E: countless reliability problems as mentioned on HK boards....not to mention that same gun in 550 (same gun minor diff.) is a known unreliable gun................ergo no plus

F: numerous reports of breaking fore_end plastic...not to mention fore-end causing blisters when shooting.......................ergo no plus

break it, fix it....sell it then buy 2 ARs with the money you get from selling it. :D

200 rounds will hardly get it warmed up.

Go to a class where you will put '4 months worth' of ammo downrange in 5 days...

THAT is a test.

200 isn't any kind of stress test.

My WASR10 did 9,500-10K in 3 weeks...

Oh I will take it to some classes. Just like my P2000, it is going to get run weekly, cleaned rarely, and used in competion. There will be no rest for the 556. Sorry guys, I can't afford more than $120 a week in ammo (remember, I put 500 rounds per week through my P2000). My wife is already looking at with an evil stare every time I mention I am going to Academy sports.:)

Nomad. Torture testing my AK would be much cheaper!! But I have already done that.

I think that is a big plus. You get the advantage of cheap mags and an interesting rifle.

B: far more expensive than Ar15............ergo no plus

Actually, it is right in line or cheaper than piston ARs.

C: parts more expensive and infinitely less available than AR..........ergo no plus

That's true. But I have an AR and and Ak. If I was worried about parts I would sell my AR and just keep feeding my AK.

D: not as modular as an AR15..................ergo no plus

Uh, OK. They both seem pretty "modular." Some folks on the SIg boards are already putting 552 lowers and uppers on with just a few push pins removed.

E: countless reliability problems as mentioned on HK boards....not to mention that same gun in 550 (same gun minor diff.) is a known unreliable gun................ergo no plus

What HK board?? The 550 is hardly known as an unreliable gun. It is a brutally reliable gun. In fact, many Special Operations groups world wide, including the GSG-9 field the 550 series. It seems unlikely that they would adopt an unreliable gun.

F: numerous reports of breaking fore_end plastic...not to mention fore-end causing blisters when shooting.......................ergo no plus

I do remember one guy on SIG forum breaking his forend while removing it. I haven't seen numerous reports, but I am sure you can link us to them.

The forend is actually quite sturdy. MUCH more sturdy than a standard M4 forend (thicker, etc) and easier to remove.

Here is my M4 and AK waiting for me to break my 556.

Whoa, Greg---didn't know you were a member of this forum as well, haven't seen a post of yours for a while!

I look forward to posts as detailed about you trying to break your 556 as your posts on http://www.theblackhole.us/forum/ about your P2000.

Nice pictures, too. Keep those coming, as well :D

EDIT: is that AK a x39 or a 5.56?

for the last 12000rds I've been trying to break my AK with absolutely no success... I'd give up if I weren't so addicted to it.

i am reporting this post to the folks at the american society to prevent cruelty to evil black rifles (and hk pistols). :neener:

good luck with the sig project. if you REALLY want to destroy it ... i would suggest tossing the thing into the ocean for a few hours, and THEN fire it to death.

Excuse me? I've been shooting 550's for 20 years now and I've got not a bad word to say about them. A little heavy perhaps, and a little less ergonomic than an AR but unbeatably accurate (literally, it being the most accurate assault rifle in the world) and near-unbeatably reliable.

As for this torture test, I'd like to see sand/dirt/mud/water* tests and also a drop test of some kind. Perhaps a speed shooting test e.g. 200 rounds as fast as you can fire and reload.

*Fresh water is good but salt water is better! The 550 is used by Swiss divers so we can presume it can take it, but how does this contraption compare?

They dive off of the ships of the swiss Navy LOL.
A few years back I spent a month in Switzerland, and I rode the fondue boat, and after a couple rounds of fondue spiked with Kirsch I was ready to dive off the boat into lake Zurich.

So.........I don't understand why you would want to break it?????
Think of it as a torture/endurance test for reliability, parts breakage, etc, under standard conditions, or maybe those a bit more rigorous than any of us will put our rifles through. It's an informative thing, seeing what the weapon's limits are, so we don't have to be unpleasantly surprised when/if we buy one.

If he REALLY wanted to break it, there are far more effective ways to break a firearm than fire it a lot.
