im 19 and relatively poor...but my friend and i decided we were going to trick a relatively simple and inexpensive rifle out he has a 10/22 to work with....i was thinking one of the following (im looking for somthing simple and cheap and easy to work with that will get considerably improved accuracy and look good while doing it)

1: Ruger 10/22
2: Yugo Sks
3: Mosin Nagant ( i know i know dont screw with history but there are literally millions and these are good cheap rifles)

ps i might mention i have absolutely no expeirence with modifying weapons at all

Stick with the 10/22. They are inexpensive, accurate, easy to modify, tons of parts, lots of regular THR users with them, and a blast to shoot.

Plus you can bust a ton of ammo for cheap.

Good luck

The 10/22 is the rimfire Lego gun. You can modify to your hearts content with many drop in parts.

You will shoot a .22 more often than you will any other, and will become a better marksman in doing so. This is much more important than any modification of hardware.

Another reason to stick with the 10/22 is that there is a ton of information on mods ranging from very inexpensive to elbow grease only that you can do to make it better.

If you only want to trick a firearm with aftermarket accessories, then you can't do much better than a 10/22 for selection. But if you want accuracy as you say, then consider it in 17hmr. It will cost about $5-8 for a box of 50-100 rounds, but you will shoot circles around his 22LR. ;)

I actually prefer bolt actions because I truely believe that they make you a better shot since you do't have that follow up shot so close at hand...I know I take more time to aim and breath and squeeze. But I am not sure what bolt action rimfire to suggest with an aftermarket anywhere near that of the 10/22. I think there are some good barrel selections for Rugers 77/22 and 77/17. I think they even have trigger mods available. But they won't have all the folding stocks and muzzle breaks and 50 round detachable mags. ;) But you said you wanted accuracy right? or a little of both?

Those other two guns, the SKS and the Nagant I can't really speak for. I did own an SKS for about 2 weeks, but I never took any pride owning it like I do my other guns. They are cool, don't get me wrong, they just don't have that magic...for me at least.

PS
Don't get cheap on the scope.

Yeah, work on the 10/22 (and I don't even LIKE them all that much)...But I don't like them simply because they aren't too accurate(out of the box) compared to similarly priced guns. But, if you wanna accurize 'em NOW you got something. There's gazillions of parts out there to make 'em better, and you can do pretty much all of the work with very basic tools. And, you can shoot alot of ammo while testing and fine tuning your modifications.

I have 2 SKSs, and they are more accurate than many would give them credit for...BUT you need to use high quality ammo($$$$), and they're still never gonna be tack drivers. These a few parts you can add, but none is gonna make a huge difference in accuracy.

And Mosins can be pretty accurate, I'm building a sporter one myself (whenever I get the time to finish it). But it takes a bit of work, there are limited parts (related to accurizing) out there. If you wanna play with a centerfire bolt gun, spend more and get a Mauser. I've built a nice gun for about $200(including scope), by scrounging parts and doing all the work (including drilling scope mounts and bending the bolt) myself. Working on another now, that'll end up costing a bit more(but not much), but thats because I'm gonna ream it out to 8mm-06 AI. Lots of Mauser parts available, including used stuff on the auction sites., But again, milsurp ammo isn't very accurate, so ammo costs, if your really wanna shoot for some accuracy, is relatively high.

I don't normally suggest the 10/22 because as another poster mentioned, they aren't all that accurate out of the box and you can do a lot better with other choices. BUT, if you are into doing mods and tinkering with the gun, there is absolutely no better choice on the planet. There is an infinite number of accessories/mods available at any price level and it's cheap to shoot as well. It's the tinkerer's dream gun.
Have fun!

If you try to wring better accuracy out of an SKS or Mosin Nagant, you will likely end up sorely dissapointed, especially as a beginner.

A twenty two rifle like the 10/22 is the best type of gun to learn on and you can definately get it to shoot more accurately with minimal money.

I bought a cheap Romanian Trainer and did just what you are talking about. There are no aftermarket parts for this gun so I just went with the basics. I scoped it, free floated the barrel, bedded the receiver, and lightened the trigger. A very fun and rewarding project for very little money.
