What projectiles should or could be used in the different rates of twist in barrels. Can a patched round ball be shot from an inline with a 1:28 twist? How about minnie ball or conicals. Does an inline with a 1:28 twist always have to shoot sabots? How about a Lee REAL bulled, lubed with bore butter or any other suggested lube of coarse, work? Just wondering what works.

Thanks

Someone else might have a more technical answer than mine but the rifling depth has just as much to do with it as the rate of twist. Your inline has shallow rifling most likely and would be fine to shoot lead conicals/minies as well as sabots. As to patch and ball they require a deeper rifling and would not get very good results from the shallow rifling of the gun. 1:28 would be very fast for a ball and if not shot at very low velocity may "jump the tracks" and strip through the rifling causing the ball to go god knows where. As to lube use what ever you like. There are too many good ones to list and they all work, some do better at keeping the fouling soft and offering more repeat shots between swabbing the bore. I have a Winchester .50 inline with a 1:28 twist that shoots great with 285gr PowerBelt bullets.

One can never tell if a particular conical will shoot decently out of any inline without doing some accuracy testing. Some of the lead conicals that have shown better performance are custom made and sized for the individual bore. That may be because the rifling is so shallow which is really designed for shooting tighter, more precision made and uniform fitting plastic sabots.
The new Hornady FTB, hollow base jacketed conical has received many good reviews probably because they do have a precision fit and ballistic design.
They're available at many Walmarts, but they're more costly than most.
Some conicals, but not all, can benefit from loading a wool wad or other over powder wad underneath them. It's just something else to try, mostly along with the flat base conicals.

Post #11 in the thread directly below contains a short field report of FTB accuracy results:

A small minority of inlines will reportedly shoot patched round balls with much reduced loads fairly well including some of the Knight rifles and the Remington 700ML. But the desire to shoot round balls out of more inlines may be one reason why Hornady came out with their "Hard Ball" ammo, a harder round ball combined with a special sabot.
