Sorry but most of the large dogs i have dealt with family wise or at the pound have had hip problems in old age, that is based off my experience. I dont deal with dog with OFA or those who breed, just the one that find there way to the street.

Maybe thats why my views are not correct. So my statment is true to me.

"Look at what we have. Protection trained dogs such as these are in the thousands. Like 10 thousand for a good one."

:what: SWEET JESUS!:what: I could only afford that if I robbed a few hundred banks!

That would be a fully trained dog, A handler class package, and follow ups.

A good Cooperhaus pup $1,000

training up to basic protection $4,000

Advanced, Tracking ,extraction, area gaurd, etc, $5,000

But, Buy a Good pup. JOin a club, SCH, DVD, Pro, etc. Probly $30 a month.

But you get what you pay for.

I have a least ten in training for my Malinois. BUt it is free for me.

I've got 7 american pitbulls and 2 american bulldogs, their very good watch as watchdogs. My pitbulls are very sweet and loving to me and my wife, they bark and alert if somebody or someone is very near my house specially at night. But their very sweet and loving, I love my dogs very much they are part of our family. We treat them like kids but when I say no or stay all of them listen, we should train our dogs to not only as a watchdog but they should know that your still the boss. If you trained your dogs to be human aggressive or as fighting dogs you can't expect them to be nice to others, so for me disipline and good relation to your pets is one of the most important thing thanks..

Get a Great Dane

We had a Great Dane, and it's the ideal dog. Gentle with kids, very tolerant and loving with the family. But, barks at strangers and serves not only as a warning system but also as a protection system. A Great Dane's jaws are ridiculously powerful and they'll rip apart an intruder. Plus, the sheer size factor (200+ lbs and huge) will scare most would-be intruders off once they see the dog in the window or hear it's deep, loud bark.

My friends also had one and they never locked their doors, even when they were gone. A person would have to be suicidal to open their door with that dog inside. But the dog was great with kids, cats, and other dogs (once it got to smell them/know them, etc.).

Down sides to Great Danes include short life span of 7-8 years (big dogs don't live as long) and hip problems when they're older (true of most big dogs). But the good news is, you can give more dogs a home since you'll go through more of them.

If you, like most firearms owners, don't need a professional attack/guard dog, but a great buddy who alerts you to any harm, please consider adopting an older dog from the local pound or rescue organizations. You don't buy a friend!

I talked to a friend of mine who owns a repair shop next door today. He owns a mixed pit bull. His 2 little girls raise it & it's a great family member to them. He says that he'd rather have a dog that'll start chewing on a intruder rather than a alarm that just calls for help while he's getting a beatdown:D . I agreed.

I agree with PlayboyPenguin get a Basset Hound.

Hows this for a guard patrol.

I agree if you need a dog for any purpose. Hunting, SAR, Protection, etc. There are millions of dogs that need a home.

However. If you do need a dog with a purpose. I doubt you will find what you are looking for.

Dogs dont know if thaey are bought or adopted. So the touchy/feely , You cant buy a friend, is over the top.

we have a dog that is worth over twenty grand. He is his owners best friend.

And I have one , I found on ruck march six years ago that is my wifes bud.

As far as "dont need" The people on this forum have lots of things we dont need.

1911 customs, etc. But we like them, and they help us stay safe. So we have them.

I dont need my fast car, and I did not have to marry a pretty blond.

But life is short. I dont need a tenth handgun, but I am buying one on Sunday.

If I lived down under. I would need a gaurd dog. as the gov there is bent on taking all the guns.

Pick of the Litter!

For a noisy, first line of defense, good with children companion, and for introducing your family to hound hunting, I vote on a beagle! They ARE known to be chow hounds, but are seldom dangerous to family and known visitors. They won't require much maintenance or training. If someone happens to enter their territory, barking IS going to happen! They are small enough to control physically. They like to sniff smells- rabbits can drive them wild and terrapins are aften found by letting the dog follow his nose. Learning by watching the dog do this is training for your family by itself! They'll learn to be observant, see how habits can cause good and bad results, heck- the kids might even learn to smell that a stranger is or has been around!

What beagles usually ARE NOT is an aggressive, defensive weapon (they know when to retreat!). You should not expect one to drag the bad guy out of his vehicle, or even to take the BG down as he enters your domicile. Your insurance company will not drop your coverage because you own a dog that is an "aggressive" breed.
