my a wife is starting to show some interest in guns :) shes petite and a shotgun even 20ga might be a little much. any women here have any range time with a ps 90 or know any. they are little pricey but i dont mind it looks perfect for her, compact, looks light (i have never picked one up) hows the recoil? penetration? effectivness?

What's the gun for? Plinking? Self defense?

PS90 has almost no recoil. Penetration with commercial ammo should be about the same as other FMJ pistol ammo. As far as effectiveness, 5.7 just hasn't been out that long. The round depends totally on high velocity for terminal effectiveness. If it works, it should work as well as other pistol rounds. If it doesn't, you're making .22 caliber holes in the bad guy. OTOH, she has 50 chances to get a bullet to work with the PS90.

I'd probably try her out on a lightweight AR15. 5.56 NATO is an proven effective round. Recoil will be heavier than the PS90 but 85lb Vietnamese women could handle it with no problems.

I agree with Brian an AR is cheaper, more effective, easy to use, and has a larger backing. Though if you want a ps90 for her that would be fine too. I'm not sure if they make them, but if you could get some "varmint" type rounds for the ps90 you wouldn't have to worry about overpenetration and they would be fairly effective for SD. I've heard of many problems with people handloading for 5.7, I'm sure it can be done safely, but it seems like I've heard of more problems in that caliber than others.

As another side note, I always say people underestimate girls/smaller people. I weigh 140 lbs and I can shoot any caliber just as well or better than most large guys. When I met my wife she weighed 110 lbs. and she could shoot a 12 guage w/ buckshot no problem.. it is much more "attitude" and form than size.

I'm not a female, but my best friend bought a Ps90 for himself and his wife. She is very petite, and can handle the ps90 very well. YMMV, but this rifle is very compact, and is confidence inspiring. I have shot it and found it very comfortable. They bought the tri rail version, and have a small sig sauer red dot on it. Very reliable, accurate, and compact. As with any weapon system she will have to practice with it. But it is the complete opposite of intimidating.

My friends wife has shot an AR and she chooses the PS90 over it. I think the ammo will do more than suffice for self defense as well.

Good luck!

Ammo is actually pretty cheap for the PS90, I've seen it for $18.95 per 50 rounds. Which is much cheaper than .223/5.56. What would the ballistics compare to ? A .22 Magnum perhaps ?

My husband started me off on our AR-15, when I showed interest in shooting. I used the benchrest until I got comfortable with the gun. The recoil was light for me; and using the rest helped me get proper form. The ammo is expensive right and in short supply for the AR, which is why we just got a Ruger 10/22.

Perhaps you're right, I was comparing that to the 31.99 (per 50 rounds) Cabelas had .223 at, but yes in bulk I've seen steel cases .223 as low as $250 per 1000 rounds and Lake City 5.56 at around $425 or so.

Sorry, this is a bit off topic, but why is XM855 like $700-$1200 per thousand ? I understand ammo is higher in general, but it's around 2x as much as XM193. Thanks

Why pay centerfire gun and ammunition prices for someone "starting to show some interest in guns?"

Duh, because truth-be-told HE wants a ps90, this is just a good excuse. That's why I say "go for it".

Yea, they're pretty cool and will likely be worth a good deal of money some day. I kinda look at them the same way as SP89's and HK94's in the 80's, they were so expensive they never sold that many, and now they're worth big bucks.

Get her a Beretta Storm in 9mm, its the only carbine my wife can shoot and she loves it. Plus it costs way less than a P90.

its for my wife for self defense/home defense a shot gun is to heavy for her i think a AR maybe too. light and compact is what i am looking for is 5.7 really only as powerful as 22 mag?????

My wife is not big-- and my 12 year old daughter is a pip-- that being said, both can handle my M44 with no ill issues except bruising-- which I get. No more than an AR recoils, coupled with the availablility of the .223 and parts, I would get her an AR--

makes sense....

I bought my wife a PS90 and she loves it. It has no recoil and she can tell her friends all about "her" rifle. It was worth every penny, because she now let's me buy what I want. The argument plays over and over in my head about the practicality of owning it, but what the heck... my wife is happy, willing to go shooting with me, and I can buy guns, parts, etc. without her being upset. Win, win!

i have been reading its more like a 9mm on wickipedia any truth to that?

Steer clear of wikipedia for most of this.

You are going to find a wide variety of claims made, both for and against the 5.7.

Some will claim it's effective as 9mm, some will claim it's as effective as a .22WMR or even worse.

Both camps will use bits and pieces of what little data there is to justify their claims, and both groups will get very defensive if you challenge their position.

The round is likely somewhere in between. No one that says it is completely useless has volunteered to get shot with it I notice :)

The original round, the SS190, was used in many of the ballistics tests you will find out there. That bullet was designed to penetrate body armor and so it has very poor performance doing anything else.

Since then, several other bullet designs have been put into use and at least one aftermarket company is selling a self defense specific load.

I have a PS90 and a Five Seven. I would not hesitate to use them for self defense. However, they would not be my first choice at all.

But for the case of someone of small stature with recoil sensitivity I personally think the round is a great choice.

Shot placement is king as they say. I'd rather hit once with a 5.7 than miss 20 times with a .45.

With the recoil of the PS90 being practically non-existent it's a good place to start. Completely reliable, and 50 rounds so you don't have to worry much about training wives on tactical reloads.

Nope. The PS90 weighs over 6lbs, and an AR would come in under 6lbs, and would be much less expensive.

Oh god here we go comparing the 5.7 to a .22 mag again. Keep in mind the .22 mag tested in the video is a 24" rifle.

Let's see here:

From a pistol (FN FiveSeven) it equals a 22 mag from a rifle. From the PS90 it'll be better, but still a far cry from the 5.56.

People use that comparison for a reason. Same caliber, same bullet weights, same velocity, in THAT head to head comparison. Any differences is in bullet construction.

I don't have audio where I am, but do they mention anywhere in the video what bullet they're using in the .22 WMR?

My wife loves her M-1 carbine (she's 5'3" 130 lb.). It's a great weapon for those of small stature or recoil sensitivity. With softpoints or Corbon ammo in the clips, it's going to stop evildoers at suburban ranges. That said, if you want a PS90, go for it but do it sooner than later.

One thing that is a notable difference between the 5.7 round and the 5.56 or even a 9mm carbine is muzzle blast. The felt recoil of a 5.56 carbine is very low but the muzzle blast can scare a new shooter even if the recoil is very light or non existent. My STG 5.56 had no felt recoil but being a 16" bullpup with a muzzle break it had a serious report. It was interesting to me to see newer shooters have a harder time with it than the PS90 or other 5.56 carbines. The blast affected them not the recoil.

The PS 90 is in my experience a super reliable (I have never had a malfunction) and accurate rifle. Recoil is non existent, the muzzle blast and report are very mild. I like the layout of the PS90 and find it to be a very handy quick pointing weapon. Follow up shots are easy to make very quickly. I really enjoy mine. Everyone I have let shoot it enjoys it as well.

This last weekend my brother made a measured 175 yd shot offhand on a jackrabbit with the PS90. We both were able to consistently make hits on a medium sized fire extinguisher at a measured 198 yds shooting off hand.

People will say that an AR is cheaper but if you buy a high end AR they are about the same.

That said I agree the AR platform is more useful than a PS90. The 5.7 round is weaker than what I would like for self defense. It is better than nothing but I consider it very marginal based on seeing its performance on various critters vis a vis other rounds. Mags are much cheaper for the AR. The PS90 optical sight washes out in bright light and if you go with a railed version optics add to the price. There is a fix for the washout but I haven't yet tried it and cannot comment on it.

For serious use I would rather have my AR (or a number of other weapons). For fun and introducing new shooters the PS 90 is great. My friends brother is not real into guns. I think he is adverse to the noise and to recoil. When he comes shooting the only two guns he shoots are the GSG 5 and the PS90. One could choose a better SD weapon but one could certainly do worse as well.

I would let her handle and if possible shoot various guns and see what she really likes and is comfortable shooting.
