I finally raided the piggy bank and bought the KF 16" carbine. I have some money
left over for an optic, and what I'd really like to put on it is some type of
dual-use scope like the Leupold MK 4 MR/T, at 1.5-5x20. Problem is that
the durn scope is almost $900, and I just don't have that much to spend
at this time. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a scope with
similar characteristics that isn't quite that expensive? Thanks much.

The Meopta Meostar 1-4x with red dot is a pretty slick scope. You might look here.

I have really enjoyed using the Hensholdt 4x Fero-Z on mine. No complaints.

The Hensoldt is always a good choice with the G3 design though its optics are as bit dated by today's standards. Still its Zeiss glass. Here are some other good ones in that same format:

Thanks much for the replies. I ended up with a Nitrex TR One
1.5-5x32. I don't know much about the brand, but the
price was definitely right. Seems like a nicely constructed scope, and Nitrex got a couple of thumbs-up from two customers in the shop. I just hope it holds up on a .308 MBR.

I got the scope mounted today and took the PTR to the range. It was indoors
at 30 yds. max, but once I got zeroed I was really pleased with the results.
I'll post a range report and pics as soon as my new camera gets here.
The rifle is an absolute blast to shoot, and I think the Nitrex scope
will end up complementing it nicely.

Nitrex and Weaver scopes are distributed differently, but are largely the same products (if configured the same) as they are owned by the same company. Weaver will have some more product variety though. They used to be made in Japan by LOW. When Weaver/Nitrex was bought by Meade, quality changed, so people suspected that there was a change in manufacturing. Now that ATK is back to owning Weaver/Nitrex, hopefully the scope quality will get better quickly.

Out of curiousity where is your Nitrex scope made?
