Pulled over today.....CCW related

Sorry you had a bad experience, I've only had a few but they've all been good.

The first one, when I told the officer, he just laughed and said something along the lines of 'ah, well i'll just have to shoot you first'.

Its important to remember that cops are just like anyone else, some of them are nice, some are jerks. Sometimes they might just be having a bad day. Overall it sounds like it went pretty well, sure he might have been a little snotty but you didn't get the third degree.

Its possible you misread his tone as snotty? You sure it wasn't just gruff and/or "matter-of-fact"? He's a cop, not a waiter, so I'm not sure what level of obsequiousness is required in his position.

The way I see it, any contact with an officer while carrying where he doesn't instantly disarm you, clear your weapon (maybe cover you with the muzzle once or twice) call in your gun's SN to check if its stolen and start lecturing you about how you "civilians" shouldn't own guns is a positive encounter.

I'd say your encounter runs somewhere between neutral and positive based on the fact that he didn't paw your piece.

Keep in mind I'm usually one of those accused of "cop bashing" here :p

Don't be overly worried or paranoid about cops not caring for CCF citizens.. most don't care. If he had an issue with it, he would have likely removed it from within your reach for the duration of the stop, had you do so, or had you at least clear it.
As far as his "tone" goes, I can't comment on it, since you cannot replicate it here for us to try to interpret. You heard what you heard, and took it as it came across to you.
Before I was ever a LEO, I was involved in a traffic accident, and the responding officer somehow guessed I had a gun in my truck. When she leaned in to record my odometer reading, she asked "where's your gun?" (It was holstered, and in the glovebox.) I told her, and she retrieved it. She asked if I minded if she unloaded it. I didn't, and suggested she put the rounds (.357) in the ashtray, which she did. She then put the re-holstered magnum back in the glovebox, and not another word on it was said. I took no offense. I never did figure out how she knew I had one, though I was delivering pizza at the time. Maybe it was common knowledge in LE circles that pizza guys carry.
(In my state of Florida, containered carry, such as in a glovebox, whether or not locked or holstered, of a loaded handgun without a CCF permit is permitted by law.)

"You probably forgot to tell him that you were paying his salary. As soon as they hear that, cops usually become nicer" ***********

I dont think so, He probably wanted to make it clear to leave the weapon alone. He colud have taken the gun out ran, the serial # and wanted check on the driver, as well as a cite.

Why would you make a rude comment and not expect a poor or rude comment back. Thats why most cops carry tape recorders now.

I probably pay more tax's than most of the people I stop. It's my choice to issue a ticket or not. Your rude comments to me will seal the deal. "See you in court,, Ok,,, I get paid several hours of over time. See whats happening here??
I dont have to k/a to do my job,, do you ????:fire:

I'm pretty sure he was joking with that, in the sense of telling your buddies that it's fun to pee on the electric fence. Buddies get zapped, laughs are had, etc.
Same here. He tells the cop all about how he pays his salary, cop gets cranky, observers get to laugh at the guy getting cited for everything under the sun. Good times.

I know my tint is illegal in Virginia. (It just looks so good on the car):p

I don't mind paying a fine for that. It was just his demeanor when he mentioned my pistol. There was no reason for him to say such a stupid comment. I've been pulled over before for a seat belt violation and the LEO was super nice. He handed back my permit and license and said Thank you.

This asshat didn't have to say "As long as it stays there, we're okay". Just a simple "Thanks" is sufficient or even no words at all.

Now I think he was pissed because he was driving a Chevy Impala and not the GTO like one of the other troopers has. :D

Wow... he was mean? I hope you had your hanky with you and could wipe away the tears.

Nope, not a LEO, just kind of wondering why you're crying over nothing. I mean this is literally nothing!

You were pulled over and a cop told you not to touch your gun. OMG... the humanity! This guy should lose his job, I mean, did he even say "please"? If he didn't, perhaps your mommy will call the police chief and mayor for you! They can have a big press conference and send him to some politically correct BS 'customer service' training. Maybe CNN will interview you and you can band together with all Americans who have ever met a rude cop! You can file a huge class action lawsuit, win $100 million dollars from the city and get your fifteen cents after the lawyers take their share. Perhaps you'll even get your noodle wet during all of the publicity.

And at the end of the day, the world will be a better place because you stood up to a mean mean police officer who simply told you not to touch a deadly weapon you had within reach.

IN>IL

What bothered me was the comment about the pistol. He didn't have to say anything at all. To me, he wanted to flex his authoritative muscle. Unnecessary. And I never said mean anywhere in my post.

I'm sure if I responded to his pistol comment, I would have had an "attitude".

Just because he was an LEO, doesn't mean he has to be a d!ck.

Wow. Who's being the d!ck?
Years ago I had a cop in Las Vegas tell me exactly the same thing when I informed him of the gun in my passenger seat, so what? I've used the same line myself since then.
Besides, what did you expect him to do? You told him where you're gun was, he told you to leave it there in a manner that let you know he meant it. If that was the worst part of your day I'd say it went pretty well.

Of course, the whole thing could have been avoided if you weren't knowingly breaking the law with the illegally tinted windows. IMO, the problem starts there, not with the cop that pulled you over.

WC, nice spin. I see you're an LEO now. Of course, you'll side with him.

I see:

Cop with attitude - his job, it's okay.
Civilian with attitude - being difficult, gets warning.

maybe he was thinking someone who would deliberatly break the law, cause it looks so good on my car, would decide to play with the gun while waiting. there are a certain number of folks who get awful involved and excited about having a gun. some do silly things

I'm not "siding" with him. I'm saying that it doesn't sound like he did anything wrong, you just didn't like the tone of his voice. Just an opinion, not taking sides.
Here's another opinion- people who knowingly break the law have no room to complain when their actions bring them unwanted attention from the police. Like I said, but for your illegally tinted windows your interaction with the cop never would have taken place. Of course that fact probably doesn't matter to you since it "just looks so good on the car" it's worth the cost and hassle.

Keep in mind that LEO's are people. I am not sure where this thought that all LEO's are pro 2A gun loving people... Just like any other job it attracts people from all walks of life and all opinions. From what I can tell your civil rights are intact and you suffered nothing worse than a slight tweeked ego... such is life. Had you not been breaking the law, cool looks or not, you would not have been stopped. I agree with WC, and yes I was a LEO so of course I would side with him. Also, ass hat is not very High Road, but as long as it stays right there we will be ok.

Yes, 98, anyone who does not see this story your way must certainly be a LEO. No other person with common sense would ever believe you're blowing this way out of proportion and crying over nothing...

Perahps the law enforcement community can incorporate your original post in police testing. If the applicant agrees with the cop, he's obviously cop material and can be hired. If the applicant agrees with you and starts shouting about civil liberties, then they are obviously unfit to be a police officer!

After talking with a few co-workers in the office this morning, this particular trooper has a rep for stopping people with "illegal equipment" (Tint, exhaust too loud, car lowerd too much, etc.) He's just a stickler for those things. I know, he is doing his job.

My main problem with the stop is his demeanor towards my concealed pistol. The whole "As long as it stays there, we're fine" in the tone he used. What did he think I was going to do, wave it around? C'mon.

Yes, I'll most likely take the tint off this weekend. No biggie for me.

And for the record, I am NOT an LEO basher whatsoever. I always respect them for what they do and their job. When the very few times I have been stopped, I have always been courteous to them. I just guess I expected them to return the courteousy. My bad.

lets recap

1 knowingly operate a car that visibly is illegal in your state
2 get pulled over for it
3 cops isn't nice after you are "overly courteous" (define overly courteous if you would)
4 go on the net and whine for sympathy

i'm gonna guess/hope you are a young feller

Oh, give me a break.

So, an officer cannot return courteousy at all? Hell, I have bad days too, but I'm not going to be a jerk to someone else. Geesh.
