A friend of mine is a shooter and he is moving to Qatar for work. It got me wondering what the gun laws in Qatar are. Are foreigners allowed to own or posses firearms? Do they have sport shooting? Any insight is appreciated.
Judging from your location, Im assuming he works for a govt contractor. Taking a gun overseas for use (private) is generally not allowed. Contract specific firearm reporting is a requirement but its usually the contractor notifying the employee its a requirement to carry, not the other way around. I would be VERY cautious. Jobs are hard to come by these days.
I think personal gun ownership in the middle east is banned or very limited. I visited the "only" gunshop in Kuwait and it was full of fine shotguns. Kuwait has a shooting complex for olympic type shooting events. I do know that they also frown on military equipment, magazines and such transiting through the airports.
We work in Afghanistan and can not fly to Dubai if we have any military items in our checked baggage, do not pass go, go directly to JAIL!!
On the plus side, there was a zillion "Iraqi guns" squirreled away in Kuwait. You'd be surprised at the number of Kuwaiti's who vow to protect their country from Iraq instead of running like they did when they got invaded in the 90's.
Kuwait "farms out" all industry, commercial businesses to third country nationals, but the military and government are all Kuwaiti.
Tell you friend to enjoy himself in Qatar, he will be safe. The middle eastern countries don't put up with criminals, quick trials and swift punishment!! I traveled all over Kuwait and never felt threatened.
I lived and worked in Qatar for 4 years at Camp As-Sayliyah between 2004 and 2008. They have a skeet shooting facility off of D-ring road by the Universities. They also had 2 licensed "gun shops" within the country that Qatari citizens could purchase items from. You will not be able to purchase a firearm legally but you can certainly rent and fire rifles at the skeet facility. Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you....
Not really relevant but before we invaded Iraq, there was a TV show that went to an Iraq gun store. They were selling out and their sign was a Beretta 92 or Helawan (sp?) clone.
