First official post for this Texas boy! Great site, tons of knowledge in one place.

It's my turn to tap into that knowledge base. I may be working on a large Hill Country ranch next summer, and will need a shorter Overall rifle than my Rem700 .270 for my truck that can hit pigs, 'yotes and other TX critters hard. I've always loved leverguns, so a Marlin 336 in .30-30 is what is on the shopping list for this winter. Since i'll have use it mostly while driving around in or working out of the ranch truck, the iron sights should be plenty good enough for me. BUT i'm interested in a QD ( quick detach) ring setup that i could put a 4x or 2-7x on. I know these systems, depending on manufacturer, use the wevaer or picatinny base.

Here's the question. If i put on a QD setup, will i still be able to utilize the iron sights with that picatinny or weaver base in place? Having to unbolt a base would defeat the purpose.
i know about see through rings, not the look i have in mind and the uberhigh scope seems counterproductive.

Thanks in advance for the help! (Sorry if a post has asked this before, google and site search didnt turn up any posts answering this question very well)

In my best answer, I think so. I have a 336BL and when I bought it planned on doing the same thing. I checked at the gun store with a Weaver 1 piece aluminum mount and it "Looked" like I could still see the sights when sighting down the gun. But the sights were not adjusted and the moount was no secured. I never mounted a scope I liked it with the factory irons.

I guess i'll have to eyeball it too haha

Anybody know of a manufacturer of low profile bases for this type application (NOT scout scope setup, would want more traditional mount location which allows irons to stay put)

i've found all the parts for this kind of setup for my 10/22, then i decided not to scope that yet. UTG makes a p-rail for 10/22 with groove down center. Thats ideal i think...

You can run a standard scope on the XS rail as well. Big advantage when the scope is off is the fact you have doubled the sight radius and have a excellent peep sight to boot.

It must be possible to see the irons over the base, or the see-through rings wouldn't work.
Leupold and Weaver make one-piece bases. Leupold and Warne make QD rings.
A 32-35 mm objective scope should clear the rear sight. Something like a 1-4x20 certainly will.

Also the Weaver 1-piece mount was "U" shaped (looking down the barrel) to allow for clearance to see the irons I believe.

good luck with the Marlin I'm really liking mine, I had it a couple months now.

Leupold medium height QRW rings

The Leupold Rifleman 1-piece base or Weaver 63B base should give you something like this with a 32mm objective:

I can see the iron sights on my Marlins through the Weaver base as a backup. If your 336 has the folding leaf, sight it in with irons for your load. Fold that sucker down and mount and sight the scope in and you should have the flexibility to switch around that you want.

Pnzercat's setup with the see-thru rings works great, the scope parallax is just worse due to the higher scope mount. The narrower see-thru aren't too good for target acquisition. Steel rings are best

Asherdan thats exactly what i was looking for, thanks!

And thanks to everybody else for chiming in too! may just have to spoil myself by buying that marlin this summer :D
