Question for Alaska residents

So if I moved to Alaska, I have to drive through gun hostile territory right?
Do folks just spend a fortune shipping their guns or what?

Do what a friend of mine did when those people didn't let him past the border: Put your vehicle on the ferry in U.S. territory and disembark in U.S. territory. They could have made some money from him on the way (food, gas, etc.) had they gotten down from their high horses.
 
Well, if they won't let you through the border in the first place, it's kinda moot, ain't it? I remember G. Gordon saying he had to get special permission from the Canucks every time he ran one of his Alaskan cruise-ship deals. He's (horrors!) a nine-x felon, even though each thing he was convicted of could be most accurately described as "Gettin cross-ways with the guvmint". Don't have a copy of "Unintended Consequences" with you when trying to cross that border:eek: or you may get some seriously creepy scrutiny from what I read & hear. Oh, Westicle, serves'm right for having an SUV; my guy had only a motorcycle and camping gear.:)

but the border works both ways, my Aunt can't goto the USA because she was busted for pot possesion back in 1969.... it never seems fair.

As long as the guns are not Prohibited, you can bring them thru canada by jumping thru the hoops..... mainly you have to get a Possesion and Aquisistion Certificate ($50 Cdn)

And then fill out the firearms decleration form declaring what firearms your bringing thru the country....

If you are four people, why don't send one or two with the ferry, with all the guns?
That shouldn't be too expensive. Two is probably best so they could take turns staying with the guns.
 
Or you COULD just ship them. I suppose it depends on how many we are talking about. Then again, the more you have the more hassle their going to give you in general. (my vote is the ferry). Plus you get to visit the LOVELY liberal playground of Bellingham , Washington.
 
try taking your guns to mexico, france, britian, germany or any other country and I think you will find the paper work worse then canada's.

Ferry to Juneau ... heck of a lot of good that does, unless you just want to live in Juneau. Even if you went to Haines you would still have to drive through the Yukon to get to the rest of Alaska.

Are there ocean going vessels direct to Anchorage? (or Valdez, etc)

jumping through the hoops ... that would work for (most?) rifles and shotguns, but not handguns AFAIK. Ship them? To where, if you are not up there yet ...?

Back in the 1970s, all you had to do was tell the Canadian border authorities that you had rifles. But then still no handguns allowed - I didn't have any back then so it didn't matter. The big thing that they wanted to know was if you had enough money to get all the way through to Alaska, even in the case of breakdowns or other misfortune.

Maybe GWB will invade western Canada ... they have oil, and who knows ... maybe they have WMDs too? :D

Should be able to have them shipped to meet you, or shipped to a gunshop/gunsmith.
 
Take the rifles and shotguns you don't mind registering with the Canadian Gov't and drive. Pack the remaining firearms for shipment and once you are there and established, have someone you know ship your other guns to you.
 
If you can time your move in the off season, ferry rates are considerably cheaper.

Also, there is a ferry that runs from Juneau to Seward across the gulf (about 1x /month). That puts you on the interior road system.
 
You can buy a round trip "web special" airline ticket to and from any city on the west coast through Anchorage for about $250! Seattle/Anchorage flights are as low as $149 during the off season. Check alaskaair.com

That would seem a lot simpler and cheaper than trying to hook ferry reservations up to the Alaska mainland road system. And (depending on how many guns you have), probably far cheaper than trying to ship them through UPS. Fly on up in the morning and drop off your guns, fly back to Seattle in the evening.

If you fly, go Alaska Air. The staff is used to dealing with firearms, and will not give you trouble if they're properly cased and declared. Get insurance on them so you're covered.

The other option is to ship your firearms to an FFL in town or to yourself at your new address. You should check with the ATF, but IIRC a self-to-self interstate transfer requires no FFL because you're not transferring the firearms. Of course getting shipment for handguns is tougher . I believe Fed Ex may still take them, but USPS does not.

Avoid Kanada. There's no way to tell what laws you'll be violating. For all I know they prohibit scopes over a certain power, and they certainly prohibit handguns. I doubt you'll get a kind reception if you have firearms of any type. Best not to risk it.
