Hello. First post here. I was wondering how long it took for any other fellow New Yorkers to receive their permit. I live in Broome County and applied for the Hunting/Target pistol permit. If you could share your experience I would appreciate it. Thanks

Mine took eight months back in 1985,mine was for CCW in Steuben county. Why did you not apply for a CCW permit?

Cayuga, Oswego, and Cortland Counties ALL issue UN-restricted pistol permits. Got mine last year after having moved here for a job. It took about 4-5 months.

I live in Suffolk county (Long Island). Mine took exactly 4 months - to the exact day.

In fact, it is my belief that I was approved prior to this and they waited to the day before the exact 4 month anniversary date to mail the approval card to me - as it was post dated on that date. The investigating officer spoke to my wife at 3 months after the application was made and noted that things had come back OK and that he could not see why I should be denied as long as she did not have a problem with me getting a handgun. Therefore, if the status was as such at 3 months then why did it take another month to send me the card noting final approval.

License Time & Restrictions Varies..!!

At one time I managed a full service gun shop in Ontario county, upstate NY. At that time, (and I've read posts that indicate even now, a "License to Carry Concealed" could take anywheres from a few months :banghead: to upwards of 12 to 14 months :cuss: depending upon the county you're in.. and then there might be additional restrictions.

Fortunately there are "legal" ways to shorten the time, (from several months to just a couple of months or less) :D to receive your license.. and at that time I was the only one in the surrounding counties to teach a prospective licensee how to go about doing it. As far as I know, (and even today), this isn't being done by anyone.. even by the instructors of the gun safety class.

Thanks for all of the responses. To follow up on some of the posts...here goes:

To roadrash 1... I wanted to (and still do) apply for conceiled carry but I got the impression from several people that I talked to that the local judge rarely grants this type of permit (one friend of mine who is an LEO said he even knew of other officers that had been denied CCW by the current admin.) I'm hoping this is something I can re-apply for after I receive my restricted permit

To Furious Styles...I'm in Whitney Point. Graduated in '95. I work right across the river from U.E. at Vestal High School.

To Firestar M40... Care to elaborate on some of the "legal" ways of shortening the wait? :)

Thanks to everyone else for sharing!

I just applied for mine in Otsego county, upstate. The lady behind the desk said it would be a four to six month wait. Applied for an unrestricted permit "For all legal purposes" under the "why do you need a gun" line. Hoping it works, the baby eagle .45 is calling me from inside that case...

I'm sorry to break in here, but I just have to say that threads like these give me the willies. 4 months, 6 months, a year? To buy something that is recognized as a right in the Constitution? I thought the 10 days was bad in MD.

I wonder what the cry would sound like if they tried to enact similar waiting/licensing periods for computers and printers? Or phones? :barf:

Good luck to you pcdurham, I hope your wait is on the short side, and Welcome to THR!

I'm in Rensselaer county..it took me 6 months. And I had target and hunting restrictions on it.I took an extra trainning class(from what I understand it's the 2nd half of the NRA course, where you actually shoot)and wrote a letter to the local judge and got my restrictions off..now it says UNRESTRICTED...peolpe in neighboring counties don't have it as easy...Albany Co sucks.....you need to see a judge for every amendment..Rens. co I just see the Permit Clerk...who is awesome!

Tony, you're saying that in Albany County, you need to see a judge every time you buy a new pistol or every time you want to 'add' a pistol to your carry permit?

Also, how many pistols can you add, and can you do them in bulk?

And are we talking about permits to own a handgun, or permits to carry?

Thanks,

- Gabe

It's my understanding that to add any handgun to your permit in Albany co. you need to see the judge...whether to posses or carry....although a permit in NY is technically a concealed carry permit, judges and sherriffs can put "restrictions" on them..usually target and hunting..meaning you CAN carry it,but only to and from target shooting and hunting...weird I know.Upstate anyway,I'm sure if there are on premisis permits for businesses and private homes....as always NYC is different.
My Dad is in Albany county..he has to wait like 2 weeks to see a judge and get his amendment...I can get mine the same day(if the permit clerk is working.)
All handguns on your permit can be CCW's if you have no restrictions.
Now I do have a shooting buddy who in Albany and has no restictions and he went to get an amnedment one time and had to see a "new" judge. The judge tried to put hunting and target restictions on the amendment. So I'm no sure what that was all about. My buddy got it straightened out though.
NY state is kind of weird with the laws.....you can't even TOUCH a handgun with out a permit.....in some Counties you ahve to have a gun on "hold" to get a permit.....some co.s can tell you you can only have certain calibers(after all what kind of wacko NEEDS anything bigger than a 22 :banghead: )
I live a good county......as always,I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV.And my info is hearsay and not legally binding...(dislaimer done) :neener:

It's my understanding that to add any handgun to your permit in Albany co. you need to see the judge...

Nope. I'm in Albany county and I just drop off the amendment at the county clerks office. I usually receive a letter from them within 5 business days informing me that the amendment has been approved by the judge and that I can stop by during office hours with the $3 fee.

Then my buddy must be getting the shaft.....I know he had to see the judge(he lives in the city of Albany now that I think about it,maybe that's different)he's Black, and last time he went before the judge he got the 3rd degree....he's not paranoid, but he did feel it was because of the way he "looked"
I'll have to check w/ my Dad and see if he had to go see the judge last time(he lives in Glenmont)
Glad you can get it done quick 12GA....
sorry if I gave out wrong info...I have no formal trainning :uhoh:
I waited till I moved to get my permit, just to avoid the Albany run around(used to live in the beautifull "south end"...... ;)

Luke, (lscurrier)

Did you get a CCW or restricted permit in Suffolk County? My brother is moving there. (And the other brother is in Syracuse! Whoever thought that the Minnesota brother would have the most gun rights?)

Here in Niagara Co. in 1977, it took about 7 months for me to get my carry permit. There is a $5.00 fee to add a handgun on to a permit here in Niagara county but there is no limit as to how many you can add. I was buying one handgun per week for several months. BTW, I think it stinks that all handguns & serial numbers must be listed on the back of the pistol permit! If they keep this crap up, soon everyone will be registering their shotguns and rifles!

when the deputy wanted to see where I'd be storing my gun,
smokemaker,
Why did the deputy want to see where you stored you gun? First of all, how did you acquire a handgun without a permit? And what was the deputy doing at your house? Was there some kind of inspection or interview? I don't understand what you mean, could you explain?

I'm with Riverrat - they had to come check out your house?! ***, over.

- Gabe

PS: Thanks, Tony.

Sounds to me like you have to go through a lot of unneccessary b.s. in any county of New York. My cousin (who lives in Virginia) went into a shop and walked out with his new Glock in under an hour. What gives! :cuss:

It's always been tough to procure a handgun in NYS but with the likes of Sens. Clinton & Schumer and Gov. Pataki it's gotten even worse. New York State is one of the toughest places in the country to get a pistol permit. If I'm not mistaken, in NYC, one needs a permit to own a shotgun. And most pistol permits are void inside the city limits of New York City. And that's probably the easiest place to buy an illegal handgun. If you get caught with an illegal handgun in NYS, it's a mandatory 1 year prison term.

I knew there were permits for CCW and then just for "target & hunting", or just to own one for your own protection at home, you can't even buy a handgun legally without a pistol permit, but I've never heard about having to see a judge each time before buying a handgun or being restricted to a certain caliber. Evidently some counties have their own rules.

New York State sucks for more then just high taxes and no jobs. Now it's for gun control and they won't be happy until they take away everyone's guns! And they know exactly how many handguns I own because they are all listed on the back of my permit and in the pistol permit office! Nice huh? All they have to do is knock on my door and say they want my guns! It says right on my permit, "good until revoked".

Just wait until Hillery is president! :banghead: Then we're all in trouble!

Here's my story and I hope you will find it as amusing as I do looking back the 30+ years since I was issued my permit to carry. Lived in Buffalo, NY, Erie County-can't even remember why I wanted to get the permit-whatever the reason, I applied, took the NRA course from a Cheektowaga cop-he even had a range for .22lr set up in his basement-so we all got to shoot, all four of us, ranging from barely legal, to someone older than me..I asked the cop what my chances were of getting my permit if I was ever arrested before, he said false accuasations were made all the time and that he was charged with rape by a perp and had to go thru undo hardship, so not to worry if you were found not guilty...six years previously, I had nasty encounter with the Bufflao legal system-NOT GUILTY, and a DUI-a rent a cop in a Nash Rambler with a blue light, chased me off Buff State Campus-the guy wasn't even his car-he must have been psychic or was that psycho, and proceded to engage me in a chase-highspeed??-I may have been going a tad fast on campus, but stopped at every stop sign and stop light while he was in heavy pursuit, with his sireeen blaring-chase ended when I drove into a pothole from hell-guess the RAC watched Dirty Harry to many times-my bike is under a car and I'm sprawled on the pavement, and Mr. RAC picks me up, and with out regard to any bodily damage I may have sustained from the encounter with the pothole, starts to toss me around like a rag doll, slamming me against his Nash Rambler-I'm amazed the rust bucket's door didn't fall off, I offerd to engage him in negotiatiions to no avail, cuffed but not stuffed, he couldn't convey, so had to call the townies, transported to the downtown jail-stripped searched and butt probed-went to court with my lawyer-received a DUI and a failure to yeild ....THAT ASIDE - a uniform made a visit to my apartment to check my residence-It was the most depressing encounter with a police officer I have ever had..the cop was drunk as a skunk- I had to take a step back in order to talk to him...when he left I took a look outside to see if he was driving-no cherry in sight-there was a station a few blocks over, so I guess this is what they gave this guy to do-walk around doing interviews...Then, the big day face to face with the issuing judge...final step to receiving the all important pistol permit - thought I had all my references in order, knew my employer had been busted by the DEA a few months earlier, they took his 5lbs of grass and his vette...but his RECORD was supposedly expunged as his daddy was a politico in an adjacent county. NOT....The only thing I had going for me, besides prior affiliation with Naval Intelligence and a Top Secret clearence, was believe it or not, I wore the same clothes to the interview that the judge wore...total prep, tweed jacket and button down blue oxford and sweater vest.....he said I didn't look to bad and the encounter with the RAC was unfortunate...asked me if I socalized with my employer-RED FLAG-I didn't, so I honestly responded , no. He told me I had to get another reference. I knew a girl from my home town whose boyfriend was a Buffalo fireman...great, a good reference!!! went to the second interview-the judge said the fireman has an outstanding warrent for parking in a disabled persons parking space...I'm starting to question my affiliations...the judge told me to tell the fireman to satisfy the warrent and approved the permit, as restricted as it was, I considered myself fortunate. The judge imparted a bit of wisdom: the restrictions don't mean ???? and don't leave the gun in the car...EVER. Moved to Essex County-transferred the permit-no restrictions..moved to a different county and on the advise of the Essex County, just changed my address in thier records-nothing in the law states that you must reapply or transfer the permit every time you move within the state-it is good until revoked, and the law reads upon application-I chose not to reapply...any address change must be made within ten days.
