Here's my story and I hope you will find it as amusing as I do looking back the 30+ years since I was issued my permit to carry. Lived in Buffalo, NY, Erie County-can't even remember why I wanted to get the permit-whatever the reason, I applied, took the NRA course from a Cheektowaga cop-he even had a range for .22lr set up in his basement-so we all got to shoot, all four of us, ranging from barely legal, to someone older than me..I asked the cop what my chances were of getting my permit if I was ever arrested before, he said false accuasations were made all the time and that he was charged with rape by a perp and had to go thru undo hardship, so not to worry if you were found not guilty...six years previously, I had nasty encounter with the Bufflao legal system-NOT GUILTY, and a DUI-a rent a cop in a Nash Rambler with a blue light, chased me off Buff State Campus-the guy wasn't even his car-he must have been psychic or was that psycho, and proceded to engage me in a chase-highspeed??-I may have been going a tad fast on campus, but stopped at every stop sign and stop light while he was in heavy pursuit, with his sireeen blaring-chase ended when I drove into a pothole from hell-guess the RAC watched Dirty Harry to many times-my bike is under a car and I'm sprawled on the pavement, and Mr. RAC picks me up, and with out regard to any bodily damage I may have sustained from the encounter with the pothole, starts to toss me around like a rag doll, slamming me against his Nash Rambler-I'm amazed the rust bucket's door didn't fall off, I offerd to engage him in negotiatiions to no avail, cuffed but not stuffed, he couldn't convey, so had to call the townies, transported to the downtown jail-stripped searched and butt probed-went to court with my lawyer-received a DUI and a failure to yeild ....THAT ASIDE - a uniform made a visit to my apartment to check my residence-It was the most depressing encounter with a police officer I have ever had..the cop was drunk as a skunk- I had to take a step back in order to talk to him...when he left I took a look outside to see if he was driving-no cherry in sight-there was a station a few blocks over, so I guess this is what they gave this guy to do-walk around doing interviews...Then, the big day face to face with the issuing judge...final step to receiving the all important pistol permit - thought I had all my references in order, knew my employer had been busted by the DEA a few months earlier, they took his 5lbs of grass and his vette...but his RECORD was supposedly expunged as his daddy was a politico in an adjacent county. NOT....The only thing I had going for me, besides prior affiliation with Naval Intelligence and a Top Secret clearence, was believe it or not, I wore the same clothes to the interview that the judge wore...total prep, tweed jacket and button down blue oxford and sweater vest.....he said I didn't look to bad and the encounter with the RAC was unfortunate...asked me if I socalized with my employer-RED FLAG-I didn't, so I honestly responded , no. He told me I had to get another reference. I knew a girl from my home town whose boyfriend was a Buffalo fireman...great, a good reference!!! went to the second interview-the judge said the fireman has an outstanding warrent for parking in a disabled persons parking space...I'm starting to question my affiliations...the judge told me to tell the fireman to satisfy the warrent and approved the permit, as restricted as it was, I considered myself fortunate. The judge imparted a bit of wisdom: the restrictions don't mean ???? and don't leave the gun in the car...EVER. Moved to Essex County-transferred the permit-no restrictions..moved to a different county and on the advise of the Essex County, just changed my address in thier records-nothing in the law states that you must reapply or transfer the permit every time you move within the state-it is good until revoked, and the law reads upon application-I chose not to reapply...any address change must be made within ten days.
