Just the other day, we had a real tragedy unfold here in FL. Some lunatic, who owned a large number of firearms murdered his girlfriend and then shot a police officer in the face. He then turned the gun on himself and finished what he started. The police were unable to recover the bodies in the house for at least a day because this psycho had also booby trapped his own body. Fortunately this was resolved with no further casualties.
As for the young cop who was shot... Thank goodness that 27 year old man is going to live. He was shot in the face so I sincerely hope that his recovery is complete and not too disfiguring.
On the radio this morning, I was listening to a program featuring a radio personality named "Bubba The Love Sponge." He was righteously indignant about what happened to that boy and has a long history of being vocally pro LEO. I think that his support of that organization is admirable. However, he went on to spout off some truly insulting things regarding firearms owners. I was angered because as a demographic, we strongly support law and order. We support the police and their efforts so long as they do not infringe on our rights.
It turns out that one of the firearms that this lunatic owned was a .50 rifle. Bubba opined that the only reason someone would own a weapon of this magnitude would be because one was planning on performing a heinous act such as the one that just happened. He and the rest of his staff proceeded to make statements that the rifle was meant to take out tanks; that according to the Geneva Convention it is illegal to fire such a weapon at individual troops; and that a single shot from one would tear you completely in half.
I was appalled and insulted. I was also amazed at the ignorance that was being touted as the truth. I am lead to believe that "Bubba" is a gun owner, himself and supports the rights of others to keep and bear arms as well. However, it appears that he is also one who believes in "sensible gun restrictions." I was truly sorry to hear a popular radio personality use his bully pulpit to spout this kind of stuff that is damaging to our rights. This was particularly distressing as he is a fairly popular radio personality across Florida and other states.
We need to remember that the second amendment is not caliber or platform restricted. It is an all or nothing proposition. We need to maintain solidarity on the issue of gun rights. Divided, we will be conquered.
Before I sign off, I just want to reiterate that a young cop with only two years on the force went down confronting a very bad person - one that had just murdered his girlfriend and one other person, IIRC. Let's hope and pray for his speedy and successful recovery.
