Hey everyone,

I'm trying to choose a range toy this summer and the FAL struck me a great purchase especially if a Dem. gets into office, however for what a FAL cost (and .308) I could get two or three other firearms. What are some of you guy's favorite rifles to shoot at the range or just have fun shooting?

I shoot all my rifles, but I really like my Saiga .223. My FAL goes to the range with me as well, I have more ammunition for that gun. But a Mosin will always go with me.

I should mention that I have a .223 carbine, a 91/30 and a .22 among others.

My current maybe list is -

24/47 Mauser
Hi-Point 995
CZ-82

Think hard before you buy, FALs are tons of fun:

I know it, I really want to buy a FAL, but letting go of that much money on one firearm is tough for a college kid!

I did it when I was in high school. I don't regret it a bit, man. Listen, if you want a DSA-quality FAL for a few hundred dollars less than their SA series, look at their STG58 line. I bought mine straight from DSA for $880, shipped.

Are you looking at prices on their website? They were advertised at over 1k when I bought from them too.

Either get the FAL, or get a few Saigas.

I'd get one in 12 gauge (likely to be a destructive device come next ban!), .308, and 7.62x39. If ya can't kill it with those three calibers...

The 12 gauge will set you back $450, the 7.62x39 around $270, and I figure the .308 will be around $300. You can convert and buy mags, too.

I think I am going to pick up a .308 Saiga, and a bunch of FBMG or Surefire mags- you could get a lot for what a FAL costs (the FAL is still a fine rifle, of course). Don't forget the compliance parts, though.

The Saiga's no slouch, USSR. If the Saigas had been in this country when I was drooling over an STG58, I may have bought a few instead of the FAL.

But I am extremely happy with my FAL either way.

Now, the Saigas, while affordable, are far from "cheapies"- they are good quality guns.

He wants several guns if he's paying that price...Saigas are a great value, particularly for expanding your rifle battery...they've got calibers to cover everything...

Now, they just need a .22 that uses 10/22 mags. THEN we'd be sitting pretty...
