rebarreling to .458 socom

anyone rebarreled a bolt action rifle to .458 socom?

i was reading up on it and just as a toy i want to. my understanding is that the 8mm mauser round shares a common bolt face size.


walk me through the complexities

In that case then so does 30-06, 308. 45 ACP, & dozens of others. What's a 458 socom?

Just did some checking. Found it to be the same diameter body as the 50 AE but a rim rebated to '06 size. Looks like a medium lengtn action for a 308 or 243 could be used the make a short light big bore.

I've been on the fence between the .458 and the 300 fireball. I ended up deciding on the 300 because of the ease of brass collection.

What is a .458 Socom? It's a .45-70 in a autoloading case.... fits right into a standard AR mag as well. Pretty cool cartridge anyways.

I'll be interested in seeing what you come up with in re-barreling a rifle.

I have a suppressed AR in 458 and always thought a turn bolt would be neat too.

i want a nice powerful rifle for bear that i can toss in the stuck. .458 sounds perfect to me since it has pretty much the same power as a .45-70 and uses the same rim size as an 06 and .308.

i was thinking about converting either a VZ-24 or a yugo 24/47. both are readily available and cheap.

wingnut ive actually been looking at the .30 fireball but the .458 just seems more practical for my needs. i have many rifles that are great for deer and smaller but really i only have the 30-06 that i trust for large black bears and its still a big thing to be chasing dogs with.

anyone have any figures on how fast a 300gr .458 would leave an 18inch barrel? i think i would top it off with a low magnification scope since the original sights would be gone with the barrels

The .458 SOCOM was made to be an AR-15 upper, and the round is designed to fit into a standard AR 15 magazine.

Its not a overly impressive bolt gun cartridge I dont think.

the brass is SUPER expensive, and if you dont live in Indiana where it is one of the few rounds that fit the hunting regulations.....

I don't know about the heavily rebated rim feeding in a bolt gun.

How about a nice .450 Marlin or .458 x 2" American with belted magnum rims?

My 405's exit a 16" at just shy of 1700 fps. You can go a little hotter in a bolt gun as the semiauto is pretty hard on the rim.


If it's just a truck gun get a lever 45-70 and call it a day. FWIW you can hand load a 45-70 in a marlin rifle and be right at the .450 marlin, if you have a ruger #1 you can knock on the door of the 458 win mag. All factory 45-70 is downloaded a bunch because there are so many old rilfes out there. All the 450 marlin does is make factory ammo that is the same as you can safely load in 45-70 out of the same gun. The only reason the case is different is so someone doesn't blow up an old gun.
