Rebel flag, guns not wanted at battle event

Do the history books that my children and grandchildren are reading depict history as it happened or as how some modern day feel good person thinks it should have been?

I am not a civil war historian but, didn't the civil war start because of trade issues with the northern states?

My impression was that the southern states were stubborn and independent minded and didn't want a federal govt dominated by northern states telling them what to do about slavery. I think the abolitionists were pushing the get the federal govt to end slavery. Northern industrial interests were joining in and pushing for advantage in trade through import/export restrictions forcing southern cotton growers to trade with them. There was essentially a failure to agree on a compromise plan to end slavery earlier and tensions just ramped up from there. Every time a new state was formed, it flared up again. The annexation of Texas was delayed 10 years or more over the issue.

I think slavery was always a big part of it, but it was tied in with everything else. Once the fighting started, ending slavery made a good rallying cry to galvanize support in the north.

That is my impression. I am sure others know a lot more about it than I do.

Has anyone reading or posting on this thread NOT read George Orwells 1984?

Ministry of information, indeed.

That mayor is a certifiable IDIOT.

Either The South was in rebellion and Ft Sumter was an act of overt violence, or the Confederacy was an independent nation and Ft Sumter was an act of war.

But that aside, rather than arguing over who did what, why don't we make sure that this mayor does things the right way so that schoolkids can remain aware of all the ONGOING political debate over the most devastating event in American history?

I'd just like to point out that a peace COULD have happened if the UN had come in and helped define which areas were Confed and which were Union, and enforced the borders with peacekeepers.:neener: :barf: :banghead:

(Yes, that was sarcasm)

We had a principal in Ft Wayne who had a Minuteman's rifle airbrushed out of a bronze to "avoid weapons in school."

And I would endorse showing up with AK-47s for historical purposes. "The Guns of the South," anyone? A GREAT book:-D

I do note that the Chief "strongly" recommends against muskets. I'm betting that, this being the South, there is no local or state law against it as they are not modern weapons. I'm leery of telling a LEO to go screw and doing something he's going to take action over, but I don't believe he can actually DO anything. Might be worth investigating with a lawyer.

And yes, everyone in the crowd should show up with flags.

This is a sore point for me. As a born Brit, how DARE the state of Hawaii keep flying the Union Jack as part of its flag?

if slavery was not the main issue, why did war not come until after "Dred Scott"?

Letter sent

Sir:

I am a veteran of the US Army and USAF, a northerner, a writer and an immigrant.

While I realize many people are uncomfortable with the presence of assorted Confederate insignia, the fact is they are a relevant part of history and necessary to an understanding of the most tragic event in US history. How can one teach children what the conflict was about if one side (Which lost) is shunned? It negates the entire reason for having such a ceremony. It is insulting to those on the Confederacy's side who gave their lives so that ultimately we became one nation again.

The ceremony I saw mentioned seems to be dignified and tasteful in its artistry. I strongly encourage that it be held thusly, and that re-enactors be encouraged to appear with their weapons and accoutrements, which are perfectly within the law.

Sincerely,

Mike

From a free speech POV, I don't think they could do anything to someone carrying a percussion rifle musket and a Confederate flag.

I wonder what response there would be from entire units of re-enactors and supportive citizens showing up in formation?

And c'mon...is someone who is upset REALLY going to attack someone with a musket and bayonet in formation with a hundred of his friends? Has this EVER happened?

If states rights wasn't an issue why did war not come until after succession?

Makes about as much sense. what are you getting at? :)

According to this, that decision was a few years before succession. Sounds like yet another BS SC decision to me.

I strongly recommend, to avoid heated tempers and a locked thread, that we discuss this EVENT and not our positions on the Civil War.

You'll notice I haven't expressed a position, and I'm not going to. Besides, my position is right and all of yours are wrong.:neener:

The federals didn't make ending slavery a goal until they faced defeat on the battlefield. If McClellan had taken Richmond in 1862 and ended the war, reunification would have proceeded without an end to slavery.

I don't know. Lincoln was an abolitionist so he would have tried. Hard to say if he would have had enough support to do it.

At the current rate of revisionism, sometime in 2126 the South will have actually won the war.

Does anybody know what laws apply to the area for period weaponry? I'd think the local police wouldn't have any trouble keeping folks in line as (from my observations) those involved tend to be historians & not hooligans.

It is a shame that this "mayor" is displaying complete disregard for history, and it would appear as though he doesn't want anybody else to see and/or experience an important part of American history.

Fly the Stars & Bars, bring in the cap & ball rifles, and give an accurate representation of history.

Why are most elected officials afraid of history? Is it that they aren't the center of attention (because they themselves weren't involved)? Guys like this make me want to puke...:barf: :barf:

Oh, and in case anybody cares, I'm from MD.

When I saw the OP, I burst out laughing. My office-mate asked me what was so funny. I told him. He asked, "Is this in California?"

I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry when I said no, Tennessee.

Why don't they invite a group of Black Union re-enactors....

or do they want to deny that Black men, all former slaves, fought and died for the Union.

Revisionism? Think again.

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause."

Abraham Lincoln, letter to Horace Greeley, Aug. 22, 1862.

I'd like to think that Mayor Tom isn't from Tennessee.

Around here, if an elected official said that our reenactments cannot use the Confederate Flag, and that we would lower the Confederate Flag and raise the US Flag while burning candles, as if we LIKED being conquered/occupied/reconstructed ... I don't think such a person could remain in office and probably wouldn't want to continue living in this area ... and I think you'd see extra Confederate Flags flying in protest everywhere around here for years.

I thought Tennessee boys felt the same way.

"I do have serious concerns about the safety and our being able as a police department to vouch that firearms used and borne in this event are safe," Moore said.
Last time I checked, that's not the role of ANY PD. My guns are plenty safe--in fact, they're safer without the PD having anything to do with them. :fire:
