Has anyone had any experiance with the Piston/Mercury type recoil reducers that install in the magazine or stock? Do they work or just a gimmick. If they do work any sugestions for which ones work best would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

They work in rifles, I know that much. Tried a 338 ultra mag with one in the stock. Helped quite a bit.

I actually have two mercury recoil reducers in a Winchester 1300 pump gun that I sometimes use for trap. One is located in the buttstock, and the other is in the magazine where the plug was before. The added weight does not bother me for use as a trap gun and helps smooth out my swing. The felt recoil is less than before I added them, however it is not less than my gas operated 1100's.

As to whether they work or not? hhmmm..I am not sure whether the mercury really helps, or if I would have been just as well off with simply adding the weights to the gun. I might just add the weight if I had it to do over and see how it worked for me.

Good Luck!

I had to add a weight to the mag cap of my 1100 28 gauge - it was too whippy - it smoothed out the swing and better balanced what was previously a butt-heavy gun.

Remember, your balance point will change as you add more weight to the butt - it might require removing some wood from the inside of the stock to balance it again

The mercury recoil reducers in the stock work, but so does lead. I load lead shot into empty hulls and crimp them shut. Then drop 2 or 3 down the stock bolt hole and stuff in paper to keep them from rattling around.

You can get more lead shot in there if you don't put it in empty hulls, but it can be messy if you have to remove it to take the stock off....... but it still works fine to reduce felt recoil.
