I have an $80 gift card from Cabelas. I am wanting to get a cheap, light pair of binoculars. These will mainly be used when hiking with my family which includes a 5 and 2 year old. I don't need anything fancy, but durable is nice. Little unsteady hands will be using these so no need for super high magnification. I'm looking in the $100-$150 price range. They have to be from Cabelas because of the gift card. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Get the leupold yosemites in 6x32. The lower magnification will work good for youngsters and you'll be surprised at the quality. They're good stuff.

I see the Redfield Rebel waterproof 10 x 42 are on sale at cabelas for 104.99
(regular 179.99) with an additional 25.00 mail in rebate from Redfield with a limited lifetime warrantee. I'm sure if you don't like them cabelas will take them back no doubt. I haven't used them and doubt if they are particularly light weight. I do use 10 x 42 leupolds and don't find them to be particularly heavy. The Nikons in the that same price range I expect are fine also but don't seem to be waterproof. If I needed a pair I'd go for the Redfields in that price range. OYE

I really doubt your 5 and 2 year old will use any pair much ( I know that you want them to). The 5 year old maybe a little. You just have other things on your mind when you are that age. Their eyes are probably still too close together for binoculars to be of much use. You will likely have to hold binoculars for them in any case. The sales that cabelas are running don't come around everyday. If taken care of a lot of these binoculars will last decades. I think for the kids if they do show an interest, then I'd get their first pair one that if they drop them and break it's not a big deal. And keep the good ones under close supervision. 10 years from now turn the good pair over to them.
OYE

Greyling,

Liked your idea about the Diamondbacks. I was looking for smaller than what you linked, but I found a 10 x 28 pair for $149.00. Only 14oz. Love the unconditional lifetime warranty.

Thanks all
