I posted this over on the Sig forum but it seems that no one cares to respond over there. I want to turn my 229 into a two tone gun and am wondering what are my options for refinishing the slide. It is "blackened" stainless and so I wonder can I simply have the slide stripped to its stainless base or should I have a new finish applied to it? I contacted Robar and they advised that I should have it refinished. If I go with them I will have it done in an electroless nickel plate, I don't need or care for the looks of their NP3 finish. I was also considering hard chrome. This is purely for aesthetic purposes and I want it to be a nice even silvery color, not grayish etc. Thanks for your advice and responses, Mike

I also have the P229 with black finished stainless slide, and have wondered about how it would look if the black finish were removed. I have seen the same gun from Sig with the stainless left bare, and it looks pretty good.

You could remove the black and replace it with electroless nickel or hard chrome, as Robar suggested. I have an older Sig P226 with factory electroless nickel finish, and it looks pretty good. But I would think the plain stainless, if finished in a matte style, would look good too, and hold up better than any plating. I don't see any problem in going that route.

Tripp Research seems to have a very good reputation. They do a hard chrome finish that lots of folks rave about. They also have fast turnaround time (8-10 shop days).

You have a couple options.

(I don't recommend this one myself) You could dremel off the finish. There's a member at SIGforum who has pics of one like this. Not for the faint at heart.

You can have the slide bead-blasted, then polished. My standard carry piece is stainless, and the flats have been polished, while the top is still matte, which reduces glare while shooting.

You can have the Nitron chemically stripped or blasted and then refinished in hard chrome. Tripp Research seems to be very popular....and at a good price. I've fired a SIG that has their satin chrome job, and it looks good.

I can also highly recommend Tripp research. I recently had the parkerized finish on my Kimber replaced with their hard chrome finish.

The basic hard chrome finish is somewhat greyish, however. The folks at Tripp polish the slide flats on the slide once it is refinished, but if you look at the SIG slide, you'll see that that would result in the large unpolished portion of the slide having a dull silver finish.

Very good information. Does anyone have any thoughts concerning sending the whole gun frame and slide so that it looks like a factory two-tone?

I have two Sig229. One I have have totally NP3 including the frame. The second one totally Metalife including the frame. After getting the second one back I send the barrel to Armoloy and had the inside chromed. After 4 years with the NP3 and 3 years with Metalife I have had no problem with either one of them.
Turnaround time on both was about 30 days.

Here is my 229 with slide done by Tripp:

Do a search on Sigforum on Tripp and see what comes back. I know there are other members that have had their slides done too.

I see no reason why you couldn't or shouldn't have the slide detail-stripped and bead-blasted. It is, after all, milled stainless and should require no more care than a stainless revolver, for instance.

Congratulations on owning one of the finest out-of-the-box combat pistols available. Mine has been the typical SIG...exceptionally accurate and reliable.

Bassman,
Thanks for the pic. That is exactly what I am looking for, beautiful gun. Mike

Wow, Bassman.

I've been considering having my P229 slide hard chromed after seeing how good my Kimber looked. Your picture just helped me make my decision.

Another sig forum member showed a pic of his sig pro slide he had done and I was hooked too. I sent my p239 slide off too and here it is:
