What is the difference between boiled linseed oil and tung oil to refresh a M1a rifle stock. I don't want to change the density of the stock. It has some nice grain I would like to bring out. The stock looks starved and dry. I just want to refresh the stock as per the owners manual. By the way, My rifle is a Springfield M1a Super Match. Thanking You in Advance, Hank

Give this link a read as to finishes in general. Both Tung and Boiled Linseed will yield about the same results.

This old thread (Sticky) also has a wealth of good how to information.

Birchwood Casey markets a product called Tru-Oil that really yields a nice oil finish. Based on the odor I think the stuff is boiled linseed oil with a drying agent added. I have used and like the Tru-Oil stuff very much.

Anyway, boiled linseed and tung oils will yield the same result pretty much depending on what you start with. Patience is what it is all about for a nice finish.

EDIT: I just came across this thread which shows a few M1A pictures. My M1A is an early 90s Springfield Armory NM gun but unlike the gun in the link mine came with an oil finish. If your stock looks like the one in the link I would start by sanding and working till the stock is uniform. If the stock isn't uniform with dark spots it will not become uniform with any oil finish.
