Hey I've got an old Remington 11-48 thats been in the family for a long time, and the gun is showing its age. I'm going to start the process of refinishing the wood, but I'm somewhat confused. The stock seems to be a bit small to me. When I see pictures of other's 11-48's the stocks look bigger. So now I'm wondering if maybe it was shortened. The recoil pad on it is about 4 11/16 x 1 11/16. Thanks for any help!

It's hard to tell anything about it from the pic with nothing to give it scale.

When the gun is assembled, how far is it from the face of the trigger to the midpoint of the outside edge of the recoil pad?

Looks like it's been shortened by an inch or so.

Standard Remington receiver gun LOP is 14-14.5" and has been for a long time.

I'm not absolutely sure about the 11-48 -- never measured one, just shouldered it -- but the ones I've seen look and shoulder just about like my old 1100 12 Gauge, which has about a 14" LOP and a very similar buttstock design.

It has been refinished before, by the looks of it. Note the varnish over the checkering. It looks a tad stubby, too.

You can buy spacers to lengthen the LOP if you want, and I've seen buttstocks like that on eBay.

It has been refinished before. The checkering looks pretty good actually, but when it was refinished the varnish was put on VERY thick especially over the checkering. I'm disappointed this stock was shortened. Maybe I'll pick one up from Numrich or ebay.

IIRC the original issue on that gun was a buttplate, not a pad. That's an older 11-48, since it lacks the flex slot in the receiver that was added later in production (and continued with the 1100/11-87) after Remington found out the receivers tended to crack at the back of the bolt handle slot when the gun got shot a lot.

I'd say the stock was indeed shortened by more than an inch if it's just over 13" with a 3/4" pad installed. Spacers are a possibility, with a new thicker pad. Or a replacement stock might turn up on eBay or somewhere, if you shop around.

I tend to shoot relatively short stocks since the 'house guns' here are fitted to my wife- with 12.5" LOP stocks, and I wear a 37" sleeve at 6'3". Try it as is, just put your thumb over on the knuckle of your trigger finger and see how that works (keeps you from bopping yourself in the nose with your thumb when it recoils). If you can adapt to the gun, no need to adapt the gun to you... . Much easier done with a too-short stock than a too long one.

BTW, I don't think that stock really needs any more refinishing either... fwiw...

Stay safe,

Oh I've fired this shotgun thousands of times, its a good shooter. But its apparent to me that its short. I'm just a few inches (3) taller than you, with a long neck, so its very apparent. And every grip combination I've come up with still doesn't prevent me from hitting my nose every now and then :( I've heard about the relief cut, and there is a small 1/8th inch long crack forming on the receiver of my gun. I plan on getting that taken care of too. But a long with that, this oddball stock size is making it hard to find a fitting recoil pad although I'm not sure it will be any easier find one with the original length stock on.

Sorry to hear your receiver is cracking, 11-48s are great old guns and I love to see 'em still at work. 'School solution' for that receiver crack used to be drilling a small hole at the end of the crack as a "stop," I don't know if that's still the accepted thing or if they'd rather cut the slot nowadays as is done in the new production guns. Glad to hear you're enjoying it no matter what you have to do to keep it running, and I hope you find a stock that you can make fit you comfortably.
