Looking to buy a .223 bolt gun. I saw a Remington 700 SPS Varmint package with a 4-12x scope at Dick's for $549. Now I have a Sightron SII I could use if I bought a non-package gun so the scope is not a deal maker or breaker. What is the current opion of the 700SPS Varmint. I know folks will say that the stock sucks, needs to be replaced. Maybe, maybe not but I would not be swapping stocks anytime soon.

So for $550 bucks is it a good buy? What are other recomendations for that price line.

Since all of the Savage varmint/target style "package" guns are noticably more, this sounds like a decent deal.

and while i agree with many others, in that the stock "as issued" isn't up to the potential of the rifle. i would not go so far as to say it needs to be tossed imediately. but i WOULD say that you might want to get the action bedded to the stock (or do it yourself if you feel up to the task), so as to have a better/more stable connection between the two.

this would allow the gun to shoot better than a truly stock example but be MUCH cheaper than an HS or similar aftermarket stock. and let you save for the better stock.

Dick's has that SPS/scope combo on sale at times for $479. I missed the sale by one day earlier this year! But last month I caught the sale and picked one up for $479 plus a $30 rebate to boot! I would suspect during this time of year they might have them on sale again before the year is out?

Since I had a spare HS stock I bolted my SPS action into it. So I am not sure sure how good it shoots with the plastic stock. The X-Mark Pro trigger on mine was good for an out of the box 700 - a little over 3lbs which really surprised me! I put in a Jewell benchrest anyway since that is what I am now used to. I did not use the scope that came with it but mounted a Weaver V16 for now.

Using match bullet reloads this rifle has really impressed me! I was out shooting it yesterday as a matter of fact. I am really pleased with the SPS!

It's a good gun, but $550 is too high for it.

Just recently they had it on sale, plus cash back from Remington. My friend bought one and after the rebate I think he paid a little over $425 for it.

550 isn't too high at all if it's a package deal with even a mediocre scope.

It is when they were going for $425-$450 just a few weeks ago.

Besides, the glass on it is garbage to most serious bolt action shooters. It will probably do just fine for someone planning to play around and punch some targets, but if they're trying to build a serious rifle from the SPS the glass needs to go.
