I've got a friend who just acquired a new Remington 700 VSS in 22-250. Trying to get this thing to shoot a reasonable elevation is giving him trouble.

For a base he's got a Smith Enterprise +20 MOA base with a milled-in picatinny rail, ARMS quick-detach rings, and a Nikon Monarch 6.5x20 scope. Good quality stuff all around.

First time we tried it out we ran out of "up" elevation in the Nikon, and it still shot 6 inches LOW at 100 yards.

NO, we were not turning the elevation adjustment the wrong way, it was shooting two FEET low when we started! The Smith base has a cut out for the ejection port, so it's not on backwards.

Initial thought was that the scope must be the problem, since everything else is pretty much "solid state". The scope was returned to Nikon, who gave it a clean bill of health and sent it back.

Off to the range again, and the same problem still exists! Still 6 inches low at 100 yards when the scope runs out of upward adjustment.

We're going to put the Nikon on a different rifle and test it out. Anyone else have an idea?

Should we expect to have to shim the scope base even with a +20 MOA base????

I know from nada about that base, but it sounds like to me that that's where the problem is. It's angled wrong, somehow. Too high at the rear, or too low at the front.

I halfway wanna ask if it's mounted backwards...

I halfway wanna ask if it's mounted backwards...

That was my first thought.

Only time I've run out of elevation was with a Savage and a known good scope. It just about got on to target (maybe 2" low at 100 yards) but it was all the way up so something wasn't right. Took the rifle, mounts, rings and scope into my dealer and he looked at it for a while then said that he would just try another set of bases. Fixed it right up. Got home and looked at the package for the bases and they were identical to the ones he sold me. I don't know if some Leupold bases were just made out of spec or mispackaged or what.

Try this?

1) Does your scope have adj. knobs on the top and right (not left)?

2) Remove quick detachable rings, inspect bases for proper fit.

3) Level rifle in cradle using a small level placed across base and fix leveled rifle in cradle.

4) Put quick detach rings on base (with out scope) and check their level.

5) Replace scope and check it's level, if both bells are the same size.

6) Disassemble down to and including bases and reassemble.

7) Post pictures of assembly so we can see it from different angles.

8) Take it to a smith.

Start at number 1 and stop when proble is solved.

Good Luck,

Remington 700 scope problem

I also had a problem mounting a Nikon 4.5x14 scope on a Rem 700 BDL. .223 After the dealer mounted the scope i tried to bore sight and was at the extreme end of the adjustment and still way off on elevation. I tried several different thickness shims and finally used 2 thickness of vinyl tape cut to fit under the front ring, probably a total of .006 and this was very close with the adjustment in the middle of the range and had no problem sighting in. I doubt that .006 makes any problem with the scope tube being distorted.

Best of luck,

I think its on backards.

Well, crap, re-ready your post and you say there's an elevation port cut out...what if its a left handed base and you have it on backards? Or, what if you have a left handed rifle and a right handed 20+ base? Eh?
