Nooby questions here....

Can someone tell me the difference between .308 win, .308 Srpingfield, and 7.62 Nato?

Based on what I'm seeing on Remingtons website, the only model 700 that you can get chambered for .308 is the SPS (Special Purpose Synthetic).

This makes no sense to me, as I thougth that .308 was a very popular round. Are there more factory ammo. options for hunting applications with the 30-06 vs. the .308?

I don't want to incite a flaming .308 vs. 30-06 debate.....

If by .308 Springfield, you mean .30-06 Springfield, The main difference is case length and a slight difference in ballistics. a .308 Win uses a shorder case than a 30-06, Ballisticly a .308 shoots the same bullet as an '06 but is about 100fps slower at the muzzle with factory ammo. Its said that a .308 is slightly more acurate than an '06. I'm not sure why but I bet someone here will know.

As for the difference between .308 and 7.62 Nato, there is a difference how they headspace. All NATO ammo will work fine in a .308 gun, but commercial ammo might not be safe in some NATO chambers. Yo should have your NATO-chambered gun checked with .308 gauges before shooting .308 ammo through it. Here is a good explanation of that difference.
