Hey everyone, new here. I'm looking at getting a new rifle that I can use as an all around hunting rifle (deer, pig, elk, moose, etc) and also take out to the range on the weekends. I'd like to have something that can shoot 500-1000 yards. Anyway, after figuring out my ballpark bugdet and doing some research, I've narrowed it down to a Remington 700 in a 7mm mag. My first question is about all the different models of the 700. I'm looking at the 700p and the 700sps and the only difference I've been able to find is that the
700p has a higher quality stock on it and costs $400-500 more. Is this correct that they are the same gun just with a different stock? And if so, could one buy the 700sps and then put a 700p stock on it?
Next question is about optics. I haven't researched it much, but can anyone recommend a scope for this setup in the $500-1000 price range? What's a good brand? What would be a good magnification range? Thanks all. Look forward to all the great advice.

As far as the scope goes, I just bought 2 Leupold VXIII 6.5-20 LR scopes for a .220 swift and 22-250 that will be shot at ranges up to about 800-900 yards. I got them off gunbroker for $500 and $530 each.

I would go with a 700 SPS Tactical in 308 Win. Nice compact rifle. You can put a nicer stock it to free float the barrel or leave it as is. The Bell & Carlson aluminum bedding block stocks are excellent for the money. I have an HS Precision vertical grip stock on mine.

Max100 can I ask what you are loading for that rifle. I have the 700 SPS in a 308 that I have had the barrel cut to 20" and finished with a recessed target crown. It is driving me nuts though trying fine a load it likes. I'm looking for a whitetail load in 162 -168 grain bullets.

Is the barrel free floated and is it still wearing the factory stock. It has a 1 in 12 twist. Have you tried a lighter grain bullet.

I don't hunt or reload.. Mine is a paper puncher. I shoot mostly match ammo out of mine. It likes 168gr Black Hills match ammo. I get 3/4" to 1/2" three shot groups @ 100 yards most of the time.

Fallguy,
Try this one:

168 grain Nolser Ballistic Tip
44.5 grains of Reloder 15
CCI BR2 primer
2.82" OAL
Should get you around 2,600 fps...puts 5 rounds through one tiny lil hole (the hole measures .6" which is .3 MOA) at 100 yards in my SPS Tactical.

Solid 900 yard load for me.

I've narrowed it down to a Remington 700 in a 7mm mag. I'm looking at the 700p and the 700sps

The 700P is a heavy barrel tactical style rifle where I did not see a heavy barrel 700SPS in 7mm mag on the Rem website , only the standard barrel. Unless it is new and not listed.

The 700p and SPS Tactical have the same barrell and action on different stocks. The price difference should be closer that what is posted. In any case the HS Stock on the 700P and LTR sells for $350 new and typically $250-300 used. If you want that stock (and it is a nice one), there should be little difference in price doing it either way, but at the end of the day the 700p will resale for more than a SPS converted to a 700p. I would recommend 308, it is excellent accurate round with relatively cheap factory ammo. My 700p likes 175 rounds, like Black Hills 175 Match ($26/20 or cheaper in bulk) or similar handloads that use the Sierra 175 boat tale match bullets. I would by the 20" 700LTR as the accuracy is not relaly effeted by the shorter barrell, you just lose a little velocity. If I was to go away from the 308 it would be to the 6.5 or 260rem for accuracy or 300winmag for more power in a round that is also accepted in a sniper round.

If you're going for moose, I'd step up from the 7 mag to at least 300 wm.
You get more payload and less wind drift (negligible until long range).

the 700P has a 26" heavy barrel in a HS precision stock.

The standard SPS is a sporter weight barrel in a crappy plastic stock

The SPS tactical is 20" heavy barrel in a rubber coated houge stock

You lose velocity when you lose barrel length. The 700P is heavy and gets pretty tiring to carry if you're on a long hunt.

Yes it is still in the factory stock. I have tried bullets from 150 to 168 grain. The barrel has not been free floated yet. I am going to try some 180 next. Thanks for the load tip Ridgerunner.
