I am in the process of refurbishing a very ruff/well used example of a Remington 721 that has been handed down thru family.

While refinishing the stock I was surprised to find what appears to be a brass pin thru the wood stock. The pin runs width wise between the mag well and trigger group openings.

I found some photo’s of other 721’s and they also have the pins.

I can not figure out any reason why a pins would be there.

Does anyone have any idea what this is for?

Thanks.

Brass pins are a common tool to repair cracked stocks, and the area in front of the trigger is the most common place to see cracks.

As was said already. The stock may not be damaged and this could be a reinforcement or there could have been a crack not easily seen that was repaired.

Remington regularly did that---had a .30-06 ADL in the '80's with the same thing-------just an added measure in strength is all.
