Am interested in a Remington 722. It was a 222 rechambered to 223. Anyone know what the barrel twist for the 222 in the 722 is? I'm guessing it's pretty slow, which is fine for lighter bullets in the 50-55 gr range, but it would be nice to be able to shoot a wider variety of ammo. Are newer Remington 700's in 223 cal using a faster twist? Do 700 barrels fit in 722 actions without rethreading?

Thanks for any info.

1 in 14, I think. I don't own one now to check, but you could check it with a tight patch on a cleaning rod. Measure between two points when it makes a full turn.

cdet69 is correct, they are 1in14" twist and a 700 barrel will fit a 722 action. Usually you need to time in the barrel threads if you plan to use iron sights, or want the barrel lettering position to be correct.

Thanks guys.

Did Remington use any faster twists than the 1-12 in the 700's? Was wondering about using heavier bullets, will the 62's, 65's and up stabilize in a 1-12 twist? The AR guys have been wanting 1-9 and 1-7 twists, is that necesary?

the only factory faster twist barrels I'm aware of are the 223 and 308 tactical barrels. There "may" be other heavy/varmint barrels with a faster twist but I don't know, perhaps someone else will kick in

722 barrels come up on gunbroker regularly. I usually pay around $40 for good barrels & around $20 for ok barrels. I have a very good condition .222 barrel from a 700 that I'll make you a deal on.

Well, a 222 700 barrel probably isnt getting me ahead as far as a faster twist. Thanks tho Jim.

Was thinking if they used faster twist barrels, a decent take-off may be available, but it doesnt look like I'm gaining much with standard barrels over what's on it. Maybe 1-12 instead of 1-14.

Haven't been back to town to look at it again yet. May put it on layaway. They want $350 for the gun, Bueler two piece mounts and rings, and a Simmons scope. I miss plinking with the AR (or the nice mild shooting caliber), but don't really miss the AR all that much, if that makes sense. A decent bolt rifle will do all the plinking I need, tho we shoot to 600+ yards at our spot, hence the urge to shoot heavier bullets.

Remington now makes at least some .223's with 9 twist barrels. That will handle a 68-69 grain bullet for sure and maybe a 75-77.
A takeoff barrel will not be expensive, but...
Can you install and headspace the barrel and open up the stock for what will probably be a heavier barrel? Paying a gunsmith to rebarrel will take that rifle right out of the bargain category.

I have a rebarreled 700 that was done by Pac Nor in a 1 in 14. Even though it has had many thousands of rounds of ground squirrel hunting in it, I am the second owner. I am able to get a about .5 to .8 MOA with ten rounds at 100 yards, using 40 Grain Ballistic Tip Nosler bullets using 28.5 grains of BL- C powder, and CCI primers in Remington cases.
