Are you asking if it would be good to have a firing pin safety, or to change it so it is striker fired, or to add a doohickey to the trigger doesnt allow the trigger to be pulled unless you pull the trigger?

Firing pin safety is the #1 improvement.

Removing the push pin safety and adding something else (like a trigger doohickey) might be ok. I'm undecided about the trigger doohickey. Trigger, grip safety, etc.. they are all kind of the same to me. Whatever the external safety is, it's better than the push button on a tactical / home defense shotgun IMHO.

Bad idea.....

First, a while back I had to examine an agency 870 that had been dropped 20 feet onto concrete from a tower.

These were kept safety on, action locked closed on an empty chamber, magazine full.

What kind of bizarre agency would keep their 870's on safe with an empty chamber?

I've heard of some moronic gun policies before, but that would be towards the top.

Mossberg already sells a shotgun with a Glock/Accutrigger style trigger. They call it the LPA trigger.

Try Safety on, chamber empty and no magazine with a Beretta M9 that some Military bases require.

Sorry, Elmer, most prison systems and police depts do this, to prevent NDs by semi trained and unmotivated personnel.Relatively few Cops and COs are "Gun People".

If one knows the drill and has practiced, time from start to shot is less than one second.

Uhhh....... no. Maybe in your part of the country. In 30+ years of LE, including doing training with dozens of different agencies all over the west, I've never seen an agency carry their 870's that way. To leave one in a car like that would get you days off in my part of the country.

I voted "Not possible"
Based on my limited knowledge, the glock safe action trigger is based on a striker-fired design-the striker rests at half-cock, and the action of pulling the trigger brings the striker the rest of the way back and releases it. Unless remington was going to make a striker-fired 870, they wouldnt have much of a choice. I couldn't imagine the trigger pull if they tried to make the hammer rest at half-cock and you fully cocked it with just the trigger.

but what do I know...I'm sure there's an engineer out there way smarter than me who could come up with a way of doing it with enough time and money

I'd rank this right up there with a seat belt on my motorcycle for usefullness. But in "Soccer Mom" safety conscious America, driven by fear based advertising, I won't be surprised to see either if Obama gets re-elected.

I chose "great idea" mainly because I HATE the placement of the safety. I much prefer Mossbergs for the tang safety.

I'm sure it could be done, but I don't think it would be a good idea. I started shooting Glocks in 1990, not an early adapter by any means, but I've had a good bit of experience with them by now. And I definitely would not want that trigger, with no external safety, on any 870 I was using. But then, I've been shooting 870s for a lot longer than I've been shooting Glocks, and I'm completely comfortable with the 870's trigger plate design as it is. And it bothers me not at all to keep them stored with an empty chamber until needed. When I pick up the shotgun I chamber a round, when it's waiting for use, the chamber is empty.

It seems like bad policy to base decisions on heavily biased sensationalist hit pieces from sources known to be less than honest.

I'd imagine the lack of a manual safety would cause more accidental/negligent discharges than a potentially more effective drop safety.

There are a number of DAO-triggered shotguns available currently

And it's a very small number, and they aren't commonly available. There is the Armsel Striker and clones, and that's about all I'm aware of.

The army....

Green= No mag, charged safety on
Yellow/Amber=Magazine in, empty chamber, Charged & Safety on
Red=Magazine in, chambered, Safety on.
( Until engaged first by the enemy then you can take the safety off and engage )

Weapons are stored, No magazine ( shotguns case, no ammo ) charged & safety on.

Pretty stupid huh?
