This was on another site, so I can't vouch for it's veracity. These should be very reasonable priced guns though (one would imagine):

“Zastava Oruzje”, “Remington” sign agreement worth $3.2 million
October 18th, 2005

Kragujevac – Director of the factory “Zastava Oruzje” Dragoljub Grujovic and President of the American arms manufacturer “Remington” Thomas Milner signed today in Kragujevac the first commercial agreement for the sale and marketing of “Zastava Oruzje” products in the US during the forthcoming year, in a deal worth $3.2 million.

The agreement concerns the sale and marketing of various “Zastava Oruzje” products including, sport weapons, as well as joint development of new sport models of weapons, exchange of experience and the introduction of technical and technological innovations.

The agreement also envisages that in the forthcoming year, 24,000 carbine and small-calibre units will be placed on the US market; however the carbines will be delivered without butts and with the label, “Remington-Zastava”. The butts will be installed in the US since “Remington” produces quality polymer and layered-wood butts.

The first sale and marketing of “Zastava Oruzje” in the US, Canadian and Mexican markets is expected to take place at the beginning of 2006 and “Remington” has already printed a new catalogue that includes the offer of “Zastava Oruzje” products.

The signing of the agreement was attended by Serbian Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Policy Slobodan Lalovic, Serbian Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic, as well as representatives of the Serbia-Montenegro Ministry of Defence, Serbian Chamber of Commerce, the US embassy in Belgrade, directors of business banks and representatives of local and regional authorities.

Awesome!

Years ago, before Yugoslavia fell apart in a bloody war, a company named Zastava brought in some really nice 9mm pistols. These looked alot like Sig 226s and although I never shot one, I looked them over real well and they seemed very well made and went for very low prices. Many people that bought them really liked the pistols. When the Bosnian conflict broke out, the supply went away and never returned. Sad, they were only avaialble for a very short time.

Most of the nice Yugoslavian SKS rifles you see these days were made in the Zastava factory - they're great shooters and of very good quality.

Also, Springfield Armory has their XD pistols built in the same region - in Croatia - and they're very good pistols. I own one and love it.

This could be very good news indeed, as the Eastern Europeans make some very nice firearms, indeed.

Zastava is the factory that made the Yugo SKSes, AKs, and M48s. I wonder though if they're going to be making Yugoslavian designs and remarking them (like Springfield did with the HS2000/XD) or just making parts overseas.

Remington already has an agreement with Baikal for their "Spartan" line... not sure what it means... and that's a SMALL amount of money you cite.

A new "Remington" SKS anyone? That would be cool. But for the price they'd have to charge, I think I'll stick with an "unissued" for $150 or so.

I thought that the Charles Daly Mauser-style rifles were Zastava manufactured; I wonder what this does to the Daly lineup.....

If Remington imported some of the Zastava mauser rifles as a replacement for the 710 as a budget rifle, Remington would be making a vast improvement. Not the best made rifle in the world by a long shot, but still better than the 710.

IIRC the original factory along with all of its tooling (and some employee's including their wives and children) was destroyed during Clinton's "wag the dog" campaign. I dont think we will ever see newly made Yugo SKS or Mauser rifles, at least not made to the same standards as they were in the past.

Same company that made the Yugo BTW.

Well they are listing a sporterized and a standard version of their M59/66. I am not sure how well made they are.

I have no idea, i certainly hope that Remington imports them so we get a chance to try em out, i kinda doubt they will though. Even if these SKS rifles are built to half the standard of the previous examples they will make too much of the Remington line look like garbage while selling at half the price.

Even a poorly made SKS makes a 710 or 597 look like commie made junk, the sadness of that statment isnt lost on me either.

They could import the SKS sporter, double the price, have a far better rifle than Ruger has with its mini-whatever, and make a lot of money off them. I'd sooner expect that Remington would push for and support an import ban on semiautos than do something intelligent like that though.

If they somehow managed to get an SKS chambered in a western cartridge (like .223) they will make a fortune, and put the mini-14 into the closout bin for all time.

Zastava doesn't need Remington's help

Still, who ever would''ve thought there could be a LUX of a Tokarev?

Very cool site.

The above link doesnt work for me, but some digging reveals the article.

maybe this one will work better? http://www.srbija.sr.gov.yu/vesti/vest.php?id=16975&q=remington

Heres an interesting portion:

The buttstock swapping *almost* sounds like a means of getting an interesting rifle around 922.... (ala Robarm and the VEPR). Frankly, i would have a heart attack if I saw an exciting rifle with the Remington name pasted on the side of it (or god forbid, a pistol).

I dont think we will ever see newly made Yugo SKS or Mauser rifles, at least not made to the same standards as they were in the past.

Considering they are the company that has been making them forever, and they probably don't have as much litigation to worry about, I wouldn't be so quick to discredit the idea.

I would not mind a new M48.

And here's to hoping for some M76's :D

Right now the Yugo SKS's are widely available and many are in new/unissued condition. They're built like tanks and have a high percentage of milled parts. I'm sure they'd cost a mint if made here in the US to the same standards.

This is great. Personally I can't wait to see what they come out with.

Like c yeager, I'll be astonished if they do a 922 work around gun. I would buy a Remington AK in a heartbeat, just to have a Remington AK.

Plus Zastava is just a cool name. Say it with me... Zastava. See? :) (inside joke, the Mods know who I'm talking about).

I just hope these guns aren't "Americanized" by that I mean internal locks installed, iron sights removed, owners manual printed on all sides of the gun ,detachable magainzes shrould be optional and price jacked the hell up. Pardon my negative sounding reply.

BTW I would like a ZASTAVA LK M85 in 7.62x39, fixed mag and iron sights.
