Im running across loads of these for some odd reason and they are getting pretty cheap so i was wondering what everyone thought of these? Ive always liked the look of them but have never really handled one. The one im most interested in is the 81 in 300 savage.

So decent rifles? Or not worth it?

lots of fun to shoot, not the most accurate, but they kilt a ton of deer in the day.

What do I think? I think you should give me the names and phone numbers of the places you're finding them cheap. They're fantastic old rifles, and will not dissappoint, unless your expectations are unreasonable.

I have had several model 8s over the years in 30, 32 and 35 Remington caliber. The 35 Rem cartridges are still being made, I think, but that cartridge in the model 8 always kicked the heck out of me. The only one that I have left is in 30 Rem and it's a honey. Nice old vintage rifle.

Hello! I'm new here. You might want to check http://vintagesemiautorifle.proboards.com as there is a wealth of info there regarding the Model 8's and 81's as well as the early Winchester self loaders.
Forty-odd years ago I had a Model 8 in .25 Remington that was a real hoot to shoot. Totally reliable with factory ammunition (I had a raft of it), it had no recoil at all, just the shuffle of the long recoil action.

Cheap???

Most of the ones I see are around $500 if they are in any decent condition...

I have a Model 81 chambered for .30 Remington that I have had since 1981...my Grandad bought it for me. It was practically new, and fired very few times when he bought it at that gun show for $350.

It is now in the collectibles cabinet...still in excellent condition. I do shoot it occasionally...

The biggest issue with these guns (both 8's and 81's) is extractors...not really a big issue, just the most common problem. I have yet to have this problem with mine though.
