Picked up a Remington rider magazine pistol that's not engraved. My question is why is there two small proof marks on the barrel. A crown over p and a crown over v. Any ideas?

They sound like English "view" and "proof" marks, which would have been required for any foreign firearm that was imported into England. So, the most likely explanation is that your pistol spent some time in England at one time; any close-up pictures?

The pics turned out poorly, crown over v is a English view mark but is is very tiny compared to normal English view marks I've seen and the p is new to me.

The crown/P is the proof mark. It really should be a crown/GP or Crown/BP, but the marks are often very tiny since the marking stamps were sized to the gun.
