Hello All,

First post, so let me make this quick. I have a Traditions LT (nickel or stainless I forget) .50 Cal muzzle loader. I shot it about (3) months ago and never got around to cleaning it until now. There is a large amount of black spots (which I believe to be black powder residue) on the barrel and breach. I've tried Breakfree CLP and Elite Cleaner with a toothbrush, but this stuff wont come off. Is there any strong stuff anyone could recommend to remove this stuff? Is it normally this hard to remove the powder residue?

Thanks in Advance,

Steve

Try FLITZ liquid, its spossed ta be fer stainless but does right well fer anythin else. Or jus plain flitz, simichrome or other like it.

go to an auto parts store and get some carb spray. it cleans carbon out of carbs and the black you see is carbon fouling.have been using it on my stainless revolvers for years.

Yup carb cleaners used here, ya wanna be outdoors and REAL careful ifin ya got anythin lit up or sparkin! (DONT ask)

I use flitz er simichrome onna rag with blued guns fer final cleanin an polish, it DO get tha stubborn stains.

There is a good chance those spots are rust. Black powder has to be cleaned up right away, or it will start rusting, especially in the bore.

It's probably not "rust" if it's not brown, but maybe a corrosive staining that has lightly etched the nickel surface, especially if can't be removed.
Here's a couple of popular commercial BP solvents that others have highly recommended as being among the best:

Shooter's Choice Black Powder Gel
Butch's Black Powder Bore Shine, but be careful about getting it on your stock.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Problem Solved! After using every chemical known to man and not getting any result, I decided to try to polish the finish is MAAS metal polish. The marks came right out. Thanks everyone for your help! Thank god, I was under the impression I ruined my .50 cal.

:) :) :) :)
