Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA) has sent the following letter to the White House asking them to undo the huge harm they have caused the Second Amendment with the brief they filed in the DC gun ban case.

January 22, 2008
President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington DC 20500

Dear President Bush:

Your Solicitor General has just filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in the D.C. v. Heller case arguing that categorical gun bans of virtually all self-defense firearms are constitutional if a court determines they are "reasonable" -- the lowest standard of constitutional review.

If this view prevails, a national ban on all firearms -- including hunting rifles -- could be constitutional, even if the court decides-- on ample historical evidence -- that the Founders intended the Second Amendment as an individual right.

I would ask that you direct the Justice Department to withdraw this unfortunate brief and to replace it with an opinion which reflects the right of law-abiding Americans to keep and bear arms.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely yours,

Virgil Goode

Rep. Goode is following up his action by circulating the letter among his colleagues. He is asking other members of Congress to add their signatures in anticipation of sending President Bush another copy of the letter.

Your help is needed immediately to convince your Representative to join with Rep. Goode.

Please go to the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm to send a pre-written message urging your Rep. to be a part of this important initiative. If you prefer to contact your Representative in another fashion, here is the text we are using:

Dear Representative:

Please join with Rep. Virgil Good in signing a letter to the White House urging the President to withdraw the Solicitor General's very ill-advised brief in the D.C. gun ban case, D.C. v. Heller.

Gun Owners of America will be keeping me posted about the members of the House who have joined with Representative Goode.

Thank you very much.

Of course, GOA is actively working the Heller case as well. In fact, just today our legal and educational arm, Gun Owners Foundation, officially notified the Court of its intent to file an amicus brief. We'll be certain to make that brief available to you as soon as it is filed. In the meantime, last week GOA issued a press release blasting the Solicitor General's action that was picked up by numerous media outlets across the country. The press release is posted at http://www.gunowners.org/pr0801.htm on the GOA website.

I have contacted my Rep.

Shimkus and voiced my support for this action. May I request we all do the same?

I just emailed my Congress Critter. She would probably kiss Bush on the cheek for effectively selling out the Second Amendment, even though, I'm guessing, she despises him. Still, I hope it gives her cause to grind her teeth to hear from me AGAIN.

If this view prevails, a national ban on all firearms -- including hunting rifles -- could be constitutional
How do we start with the idea that the DC gun laws go too far and end up with the idea that the federal government can ban all firearms?

Interesting. Perhaps Congress--or, at least a delegation of Congressmen led by Rep. Goode--should file it's own amicus brief. It would be very interesting indeed for the legislators to say "we don't like the way this legislation is being taken."

I live in Michigan. My "representatives" think I am a unenlightened slack jawed redneck because I'm not a Democrat. No amount of letter writing to them would convince them their ideas about how they should run my life are wrong.

FLOOD THE MAILS.
It's time for every THR reader to send an e-mail to the President.

"Withdraw the Solicitor General's amicus brief in D.C. v. Heller."

send it to: [email protected]

Excellent Idea

Anybody want to draft up some sort of a form/email that could be sent? I think it would look kinda hokey just to cut and paste Goode's letter.

We oughta be more creative.

Matter of fact - something generic that I send to my reps (Ron Paul and then
Senators Cornyn and Hutchision) along the lines of futur contributions to the Republican party drying up due to the need to purchase extra mags and another AK :D

Does anybody really think that Bush gives a tinker's damn?

Focus your efforts on your legislators; Bush has already shown his true colors, and he's not standing for reelection.

How do we start with the idea that the DC gun laws go too far and end up with the idea that the federal government can ban all firearms?

How do they start with handguns then file a brief that mentions machine guns?

Both sides are pretty much after ALL guns. We want ALL guns, they want ALL guns banned.

the case isnt about handguns, its about interpretation of the second amendment in general, which affects all types of guns. Its only expected that every gun type be thrown into the argument in one way or another, even if they dont apply to the law in question.

also, I'm a Virginian, so I'm all set :D

Maybe I missed it, is there a list of Reps who are already doing the right thing? This way, we can thank our Reps when they do as ordered, and know which ones really are doing it.
