Very disappointing to here about fingerprints necessary, long waiting periods, all out bans on specific items. You guys know the drill...I don't need to explain the repressive laws to you.

Have you ever considered moving to a gun friendly state. Somewhere where you might be able to secure similar employment and have more freedom pursuing your firearm hobby.

Aside from the obvious answer - family, what keeps you from moving out of CA, Jersey, New York, Illinois and similar states?

Come to Minnesota, you can get a job, the people are nice, we have many interesting shops and they don't call it God's Country for nothin'.

The obvious answer has been for me my job. But as I stated in another post.... I now have the freedom to move wherever I can make money in my field (or something similar to it)...

But my wife may hate Minnesota, too cold ;D

it is nice up there
it's just that summer is only one day long i.e. the 4th of July
and that dang state bird the mosquito

I agree

Im from DC and love home but wont live there again, Im a gun nut, and I will never live in comnifornia either, sorry

For me it's family, but there's another reason to not move . ..if we give up the states completely where they're oppressive then it'll make it easier for you to lose out in the states where it isn't.

Think about it . . .the presidential elections are all being pretty much decided in "x" number of states with the biggest cities. Those same big cities have the huge number of reps in the house. The only counter balance is the senate and even that is somewhat scary.

But for me it's purely family. My in-laws are in the house this weekend, my adult children are back and my brother in-law and his family are headed up. I can't justify pulling my wonderful wife away from her family just so I don't have to jump through some hoops to own a gun. I've always wonder what I'd do if they ever outright banned me from having ANY guns . .that would make it alot harder to justify staying then.

Just my .02

Regards,
Dave

I'm sort of in the same camp of dmftoy. Besides the family reason (although I'd probably be able to convince most to uproot to PA or NC).

I just don't want to give the fight up yet. It's an uphill battle, but maybe I can help make a difference.

Well for me here in NY its school pretty much, once i finish my degree I probably will head south or west to some place more friendly. But if I get a slot in the state trooper accademy then I'll be stuck in NY for a number of years.

I refused to consider opportunities to relocate - once NJ and another time CA. NJ decision was mainly about gun rights. CA was partly other issues (cost of living).

I go to college in kansas, midwest is not for me. The social climates and peoples behaviors not being compatable I suppose are the biggest reasons for me not wanting to move. You can call it gods country to your hearts content but let me tell you my experience in the midwest has led me to think thats pure hipocrisy.

Left Calif in mid 70's, had to return or lose my son, some things are worth it, besides back then Ca. Gun law wasn't near what it is today. Even so 20 some million people, crime, and the air was enough for me.
That ended and by early 80's I had custody, left again, still gone.
First winter it hit about 10 below I froze, swore I would never live where it didn't grow palm trees. Almost to poor to move back I needed to stay, boy was I lucky. By the end of a couple of years I would never go back to stay.
Life is far to short to live under such conditions as Calif and the like offers.
If some day I choose to winter south it will be in Arizona.
Money I surely have less of, half a life time of freedom cannot be bought and is priceless.

I'm still in NJ, but only because I'm going to college here. Once I graduate, I'm out of here. At least fleeing across the river to PA, farther away if I can get away with it. (Thinking maybe Arizona)

Sometimes the Texas laws are frustrating but I'm not sure where I'd go. I think I'll try and stay and defeat the LIBERALS (I don't like the term progressive).

My last duty station before retiring was here in California and I swore to my wife and kids that we'd be in one place for all of the kids high school years. My daughter graduates next year when my son starts so I've got just under five years to go. We'll be moving to a gun friendly zone then but haven't decided where.

I not only considered moving from the People's Republic of California, but did so in 2002. Life in the United States is much better.

Same here. I left in Oct of 2003. My reasons for leaving was the generally oppressive government, out of control growth, cost of living, etc. Love it here, and as a plus, I discovered I actually have firearm rights in the US.

Nomad: Don't judge the rest of us in the midwest based on a bunch of Jayhawkers (I'm not talking about the school either).

Aside from the obvious answer - family, what keeps you from moving out of CA, Jersey, New York, Illinois and similar states?
IL does not require nor have "fingerprints necessary, long waiting periods, all out bans on specific items."
Only thing required in IL to own a gun is a FOID. Cost is $5 for 5 yrs. To get a FOID you have to answer the same questions you have to answer when filling out a 4473.
No fingerprints required. No prior permission needed to buy. No mag size limit. No restriction as to caliber.
Check this thread for states that require a permit prior to buying any individual gun. You might be surprised at some of the states listed that people often think of as being "gun friendly."

I live in CA, born and raised here. Family's here, been here since the gold rush. Sometimes, I do think about leaving, heading north... I'm a cold weather guy, and California in the summer is a bit warm for my liking, at least in the valley. Calfornia's home, though. I know it here, and by and large, I like it here. If I go, it'll be because I want to, not because I've been run out by the way things are run here. I might leave, if I feel like it, but I won't be run out.

Actually did make the move. Left California in 2002. Haven't looked back. My firearm collection was a major decision in the move.

I'm a 4th Generation Californian. Over my lifetime, the qualities I love have been diminishing exponentially. Taxes, crime, schools, regulations, crowding, traffic, demographics, the political, legal and business climate, and the general extreme cost of living have all been diluting the California dream.

Now that our last best faint hope has been shown to be just another girly man, it's time to get the hell out. Kali is circling the drain, with more eaters than producers. Arrrrnund just announced a "surprise" $14B deficit. Cost cutting measures will cause the immediate release of just about every "non-violent" (plea bargained) felon. And still, the state wants to expand the welfare state even further with universal health care, regardless of citizenship.

Our company is getting the hell out. We're looking at following our jobs to Virginia. I'll miss the ocean and the weather. That's just about all that is left to miss.

Happiness is California in the rear-view mirror

I lived in the 'Peoples Republic of California' back in the 90's , and after the AWB I shipped out my hardware, and followed in a few months.

In a few words. H@#$ YES! I consider moving every day I wake to find myself here.

Whether it be the ridiculous cost of everything.
The half suicidal, half asleep activity folks round here refer to as driving.
And lets face it websites have been dedicated to the way police treat "mere civilians" wanting to arm themselves against the recidivist S&^* bags that are daily paroled here.

What keeps me here.

I am currently contractually obligated to service with the .mil.

Rotting in prison is not my Idea of a good time.

They can keep me here till 2010 at Maximum. After that they have to move me to my home state (CO) or my state of Residence (TX).

They won't keep me here after 2010. They won't keep me at all if I don't get orders from here soon.

Coming back from a war zone to realize the Constitution you swore to protect is being sh&* on at "home" is enough for me. This place can sink into hades for all I care.

PS. Sorry for the rant, I get extra feisty around the holidays.

C Ya, California

I'm leaving CA as soon as I find a job -- any job -- somewhere in the West (UT, AZ, CO, SD, WY, ID, etc.). I can't even purchase a Kel-Tec here, among others...Anyone know of a good employment oopportunity?
