Seems like some of you are awfully quick to judge the grandmother or the parents when you have absolutely no knowledge of how the kid was raised. Did it ever occur to anybody that she might be grieving over the loss of her grandson and is letting her emotions rule? The High Road? Not in this thread.

You're right.

The High Road is in praising the old Marine for his bravery and self-reliance, and in this case, acting as a public servant in the vermin extermination business.

The vermins' relatives, in this case, took the Low Road by playing themselves and those poor, sweet, innocent boys as being the victim.

We've seen in countless times for decades. That's what Politically Correct thinking gets you. You become an apologist, just as you've become.

It's past time to start calling things for what they are. And in this case, what they are happen to be damned lousy parents/grandparents.

This shoot happened over a year ago, and was seen on THR
And it's still a most appropriate discussion, thank you very much . . . methinks those of us currently involved may not have seen the previous posts, but thank you for the historical reference . . .

It is generally considered bad form to start duplicate threads, especially when there are already four threads on a year-old news story. Forum etiquette dictates that you search for similar threads before posting a new one. The OP could have easily searched for the Marine's name, and should have done so.

When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.

Aww, the good old castle doctrine. He SHOULD have pulled the trigger. The men were armed, he was being forced into a bathroom by a armed man. If you don't fear for your life when that is happening, you have a problem.

Seems people are a bit quick to judge granny. I'm sure she is simply upset at losing her grandson. It doesn't excuse his actions but that doesn't mean she is wrong in grieving for a family member nor does it mean she should be ridiculed for speaking her mind. Just a bad day all around for that family.

I feel bad for them. The pain of losing a son and the added sting that it was his own fault.

I'm not guilty of politically correct thinking or of being an apologist. All I'm guilty of his having a little compassion for the grandmother and grandfather (who, by the way, is the one that said Mr. Lovell shouldn't have pulled the trigger).

There are absolutely no facts in this story about how the kid was raised. The only facts are that two people tried to hold up a Subway and then rob Mr. Lovell and both got shot. One died.

Where did this sweet, innocent, good child get his mug shot taken? Why didn't he finish high school? Why had he been in past legal trouble?

Doesn't take J Edgar Hoover to figure out his upbringing--and ultimately, the way he was raised contributed to the way he died.

And those responsible are blaming a victim who could very well have died at this little creep's hands.

I get the impression robbery to these people is just another misguided 'teen' thing. The family members always say they never intended to shoot anyone, 'just' rob them using intimidation. So when an upright citizen takes self defense personally, they're all upset that someone would actually do such a thing and portray it as using too much force for the situation.

To them robbery is just the same as a kid not coming home on time or getting a speeding ticket in their new car. God forbid you actually shoot them for an armed holdup.:scrutiny:

Oh, and you'll notice as usual the father is absent.

And if they should shoot a victim in an armed holdup, the grandparents will be sobbing in court blaming "society" for their little darlings' faux paux.

Who here said this kid was a sweet, innocent child? You are just making assumptions about his upbringing. For all we know his grandparents are good people who just weren't equipped to deal with bringing up this kid in today's world. I'm certainly willing to admit that I could be wrong but in the absence of any FACTS about his upbringing I'll stay away from judging the grandparents.

Actually, those that were responsible for this got a bullet to the chest and the head. They got what they deserved.

That one less that the tax payers has to support in jail..One good shot one bad shot. That good old marine need to do some target shooting , he only took care of 50 % of the problem...

"Donico was going to turn his life around as soon as he robbed and murdered that old Marine. Too bad he will never realize his dream of becoming an airline pilot."
I thought he was majoring in astrophysics or quantum mechanics and was just robbing people to support his education. Boo hoo hoo. Another baby dead by evil gun violence and the world has lost a Nobel astrophysicist. Well, maybe Fredrick can find a cure for cancer when he gets out of prison.

nor does it mean she should be ridiculed for speaking her mind.
She has a right to speak her mind.

She DOESN'T have a right to be respected for what she says NOR to be immune from criticism of it, even HARSH AND BRUTAL criticism. I have to respect her right to speak, not what she says, nor her for that matter.

Any White supremacist has a right to "speak his mind" as well. And I have a right to call him out as a brain damaged, meth smoking, inbred baboon for it too.

You have the right to speak, NOT the right to speak WITHOUT CONTRADICTION.

Per Jeff Cooper, "The proper way to deal with Armed Robbers is to shoot them." Must be something they teach in Marine Boot Camp.

Bully for the Marines!

If your grandson threatens a person with lethal force in a robbery, especially an old veteran who put his entire life on the line to protect him, the only acceptable response, besides grief over his death, is great shame and embarrassment. That these people even opened their dirty mouths to dare criticize the old gent is shameful, and a gross offense. To ridicule and shame these disgusting people is not just a good thing, it is the duty of society. Keeps other slimey people from doing the same thing.

Whether they raised him or not, their statements are atrocious. Details on his up-bringing are not necessary.

Amen! And the grandparents' reaction -- blaming the victim -- indicates this is a pattern on their part. They have probably always "defended" this kid's anti-social acts, and blamed someone else for his transgressions.

Which goes a long way to explaning why he became the monster that he was.

Did it ever occur to anybody that she might be grieving over the loss of her grandson and is letting her emotions rule?

Maybe grieving in front of the television camera is a bad idea......

Old news, but new to me, so THANK YOU for posting.

Outstanding job by the Marine no longer on active duty.

I'm sure the grandmother never took into consideration the emotional trauma her felonious grandchild inflicted during his crime, nor the impact of having to take a human life to save your own that effected the upstanding Marine.

She is incorrect in saying that the gentleman "took the law into his own hands", for he did NOT. The gentleman simply took his LIFE into his own hands and OUT of the evil hands of felons. HE chose how he was going to live OR die when confronted with the felon, and he chose LIFE. He chose wisely.

Sadly, even though the felons were shot DURING the commission of their crime, the papers FAILED to acknowledge them for what they truly were. FELONS. Instead they gave them the title "suspects". This is a disgrace and should NOT be tolerated by citizens. I fully believe in "innocent until proven guilty", but when a felon is shot and killed during the commission of a crime, they deserve to get the title they earned. FELON.

The grandparents in the article didn't lose their grandson. If you had bothered to read the article more carefully, you would realize they're the grandparents of the kid who got shot in the chest and LIVED.

The punks were taking the old marine in the bathroom to KILL him.

If they were only wanting to rob him, they could've simply taken his wallet out in the lobby and made a run for it.

They figured if they took him in the bathroom, the shots wouldn't be heard outside the building. Unfortunately, they didn't figure on him being armed. Tough luck, kiddies!

I hope granny and gramps have a nice long chat with their grandson while he's in prison, and can convince him to get on the straight and narrow path when he gets out.

Helluva good shoot, jarhead! This old soldier salutes you!
