Much like my box of holsters, I am building a good sized "Box o' slings" from different slings that didn't quite meet my needs for whatever reason. Out of that box of slings, I had come down to two basic types:

1. The quick-adjust two-point tactical sling - best typified by the Vickers VCAS and Viking VTAC slings.

2. The single point sling - typified by the Specter Gear MOUT sling in my box.

Both of these had things I liked. The two-point held the rifle more securely, could be used for hasty sling support if necessary, and was better at carrying the rifle if I needed both hands free. The quick adjust also meant I could switch to the support side, although I was limited in my motion and it usually meant having the sling strap pressed tight against my neck like a bizarre tie.

On the VTAC (first-generation), you pulled down and forward to release the extra slack. On the VCAS, you grabbed and pulled up towards your armpit with your offhand. Of the two, the VTAC was the more natural movement; but it accomplished this by leaving a long tail of slack sling dangling (the newer VTACs do not do this however). The VCAS movement was less easy to do; but didn't have any "tail." Both slings required a manly pull on the sling in order to release the slack.

On the Specter Gear, I liked that I could easily release the sling from the weapon for competition (although now that I have all quick release sling mounts, that is a moot point). I also liked the great flexibility as far as being able to switch sides quickly and effectively. On the downside, it wasn't very practical to carry it with both hands free and you had to worry about dropping the muzzle into the deck if you took a knee or bent over.

So when Magpul announced the MS2 sling that acted as both a two-point quick adjust tactical sling AND a single-point sling, I was interested to say the least. Unfortunately, with all of the Obamania, actually getting my hands on one was a bit of a challenge.

I finally was able to purchase one and I can say it was definitely worth the wait. The first thing I noticed about the MS2 was that in two-point mode, it was easier to adjust than the VCAS or VTAC. The sling is made out of a silky, almost pajama-like material and grabbing the sling tab and adjusting was much easier. In addition, the MS2 adjusts like the VTAC (pull down and forward to release slack) which I also liked.

I've done a more detailed review (with pictures at TFL) which I was too lazy to redo here; but you can find it here:

My one and only complaint about the sling is that it is a tad to thin. However with a Vest and normal clothes on you really can't tell.

I agree with you on it being thin. Even though it is the same width as the VCAS, it feels like the weight is concentrated in a more narrow area. On the flip side, I am sure that is also why it is easier to adjust quickly.

That rifle is pushing 12lbs with suppressor and a loaded mag though and I still found it comfortable. Guess I need to go do a 3-day class and see if I still feel the same way after 8 hours a day, 3 days in a row.

Yep. It is really a minor complaint. When I first got it I put it on and tested it out. I was worried. However I just had on a T-Shirt at the time. Once I put on my gear you cant' tell a difference.

Overall very nice. Perhaps not the best out there but I love the ones I have and use one on my Primary.

Well, loud is fairly subjective. Metal on metal is going to make noise. The noise does not bother me and I don't notice it - usually because I am making more noise ;)

thanks for sharing, i have been thinking about getting one of these, and when someone whose opinion i trust and respect has good things to say then that is all i need to hear! thanks.

Just a quick question,
I read your review of Magpul sling and it does seem to have a lot of positive merits.
I am just curious, of the slings you have discussed, which do you like best?
I have been considering that VTAC sling.

For my purposes, I like the Magpul MS2 best. My only complaint with it is that the thinner sling material doesn't distribute the weight as nicely as the other slings. A lot depends on personal preference and what you need to do with it though.

Nice review, thanks. I appreciate you pointing out the lock on the forward latch. I'm a noob, and mine kept coming loose. Never dropped the rifle, though :)

thanks again for your endorsement of the Magpul sling, i think i am going to look into that one some more.
although i have that Magpul UBR stock that seems to limit the overall functionality of it, i think it will still work pretty good.

A bit late to this thread but I purchased the MS2 sling as well as the ASAP sling plate for my AR. It is very easy and simple to adjust the sling as B Roberts said, very smooth material, very strong and pretty sturdy too, very hardy and well built. The front clip is simple, strong and has a "jaw bone" locking lever. The attachment to the sling plate is very solid and has a quick release 550 cord loop that can be very handy. For the most part, love the sling, it's ease of use, simple and efficient transition and solid construction.

However as I was testing the sling, the quick release is easily snagged. I do have to climb alot of mountainous terrain, not really any trees or bush but rocks and dirt and I was only wearing a belt holster and 2 pistol mags on my shooting venture. Had the sling buttstock down, 2 point mode, across the back as I was climbing and TWICE the quick detached snagged and rifle dropped pretty fast and pretty hard. Been thinking about just tapping the the quick detach shut cuz it seems to snag easily. But aside from that it is so far my favorite sling setup.

As for the ASAP sling plate and it's connection, it is a bit clanky when your not wearing the sling but once your actually wearing the sling sound is minimal as long as there is tension there.

Just so you guys know they are making an MS3 sling which to my knowledge is a bit wider strapping, triangle loop instead of the original round loop (by loop I mean the steel ring that the straps all attach too.) but I think everything else is essentially the same.

You can dip the metal parts in plastic coat to keep the jingleing down. It peels off quicky though.

The Magpul MS2 was designed for proper weapon manipulation, not comfort. Your not supposed to let your carbine hang on you all day. Just hang for transitions to secondary or reloading etc.

But for extended hikes I switch it to 2 point mode and it's a bit more comfortable like that.

I'm looking forward to the MS3, my Gear Sector SP Sling has a triangle ring and it deos help.

Nice review! Thanks.

The webbing appears to be the same as the nylon tube web strap we used to tie things down when we rigged for sea aboard the submarines. In my experience it will "wrinkle" and bunch up on the curved contours of metal buckles. It doesn't lay flat.

Unfortunately (for me, at least) those dang metal QD snaps are sewn onto the sling. I just really, really dislike metal QD snaps on my slings.
