It is easy to purchase handguns here on Maui - after you go through the permitting process. You apply for a handgun purchase permit which takes 14 days to clear. During the waiting period, the local PD does a background check on your mental and criminal history. If it comes back clear, you are issued a permit to acquire that is good for 10 days. You do this process whenever you do buy/acquire a handgun. You could make several transfers on one permit if needed but the permit is good only for 10 days after which you need to apply and go through the process again if you didn't do a handgun transfer within that 10 days.
Since I've gone through the process numerous times to do handgun transfers, I normally order my handgun a week after I start the process. By the time my order comes in to my FFL dealer, my permit is ready to pickup. I'll get my permit issued to me at the PD, go to the FFL dealer and show him my permit and pay my $20 transfer fee. He gives me my handgun and I go back to the PD to register it (no charge to register).
BTW, the very first time you do go through the permit process here on Maui, you do need to be fingerprinted, photographed and go through a firearms safety course ($40 for the course). There is a one time $25 processing fee for the initial permit to acquire process. Any subsequent applications after that you don't need to pay the processing fee, be fingerprinted/photographed, or do the firearms safety course again.
I have a 4 inch S&W model 66 K-frame and a 6 inch S&W model 686 L-frame. Although the model 686 is a better hunting revolver, the model 66 is much easier to carry. For an all-day walk through the woods, I carry the 66.
