thanks so much

i really appreciate all the insight. You guys are the best.. A lot to think about but things are starting to make sense to me..

I just picked up a Smith Model 15 4" with a little bit of finish wear for 250. This is a 38 with adjustable sights and has a better trigger than any of my other revolvers. It is defintely my most accurate revolver too. These are available. They can be found in this condition for around this price all accross the country because they were police guns in so many places.

How about a S&W model 67 .38 special? Mine was super accurate with a sweet trigger. I had a Trijicon Reflex sight on it for a while. It was a blast. Very easy to shoot well. They need no tweeking. No need for a heavy magnum frame for paper punching.

I had a Blackhawk .357 anniversary model that was disapointing.

Welcome to THR!

I'm surprised that there hasn't been much mention of a S&W Model 19. A delightful gun to shoot the cheaper and more wrist friendly .38Spl loads but also able to happily digest some .357Magnum grin makers here and there. The 4 inch barrel versions balance beautifully in the hand but I wouldn't pass up on a 6 inch version if this will be a gun used for range fun instead of carry. The longer barrel versions seem to be less pricey since they aren't so easily concealed down your way where it's legal to carry. And the 19 is great fun with +P what with it being a happy middle ground between the regular Special loads and the hotter Magnums.

Another option in the old blue steel department is the slightly larger and heavier Models 27 and 28. These are .357Magnum options using the big N frame that is the same as the .44Magnum. Nice guns to shoot and they have a really classic look to them. And if you get into reloading you can shoot +P or full Magnum loads all day long with either of these and it won't hurt the gun or wear at your wrist or hands either.

I shoot for fun and my 19 and my 28 both put a big grin on my face when I see the groupings and hit the gongs, feel that delightful S&W trigger pull and finally when I get to admire the great look and feel of the design and machine work while cleaning them. But then I'm a sucker for the classic blue steel look.
