After studying the posts here and learning quite a bit I was ready to buy the Lee classic turret to start reloading pistol. I will probably still do it, but I ran across what appears to be a good deal:

12 yr old rockchucker; 5-10 RCBS scale, funnel, case holder, powder measure and maybe some other items for $75. Supposedly in excellent condition, used to load 30-06 and 22-50 but hasn't been used in 6 years. Local seller so no shipping (just $10 in gas).

If it doesn't work for me I can always sell it on Ebay or sell my 5-0-5 scale and keep the 5-10 and maybe even make a profit.

Is there much of a difference between the old rockchuckers and the rockchucker supremes? Is it a good deal?

*** are you waiting for? $75 for the press and other tools? I'd buy that and pay for shipping on top of it.

Note: If there's anything wrong with the press, send it to RCBS. They'll refurb it or give you a brand new press outright.

Seriously, that's a good deal.

Buy it and quit thinking about it. Worst case, you can sell individual stuff you don't want or need on ebay. Last time I knew, the 5-10 is a better scale then the 505. I think it is actually made by Ohaus and has that nice fine adjustment.

Yeah, there are a few differences between the old Rockchucker and the Rockchucker Supreme presses. But they’re minor differences in my opinion.
The Rockchuker Supreme press is a bit taller, which gives you a little more room for loading really long cartridges such as my 45-110 Sharps. However, the plain old Rockchucker is plenty tall enough. In fact I loaded a good many 45-110 Sharps rounds with my old Rockchucker before I got my Rockchucker Supreme.
Another difference is the Rockchucker Supreme’s handle can be mounted on either the right or left side. From the front, the old Rockchucker’s handle is on the right as your facing the press, and I don’t think it can be mounted any other way.
Also, the Rockchuker Supreme’s primer catcher is different – the spent primers are ejected down through a hole in the ram and out the back. I actually preferred my old Rockchucker’s system for catching primers. I spent less time picking them up off the floor.
If that Rockchucker kit is in as good of shape as it sounds, $75.00 is a good buy. It seems like I paid $40.00 for mine to some guy whose wife gave it to him for Christmas and he didn’t have any use for it. That was well over 30 years ago. Since then I’ve loaded tens of thousands of rounds with it, everything from little .32 H&R and 9mm to .300 and .338 Win Mags and it’s never given me a reason to cuss it. I’m sure it would serve me well for the rest of my life if I didn’t feel kind of obligated to use the Rockchucker Supreme my wife gave me.

Thanks for all of the quick replies. I'm heading up there tomorrow. It did seem like a great deal but getting confirmation from the experts here helps my cheap A** spend the $'s with a good feeling.

I'll be back with more stupid questions.

I may bring some extra cash and see what else he may have for sale.

Thanks again!

ALWAYS take extra cash!

On a deal like that, there is normally some odds and ends laying around that he might not want...

Once got a deal similar to that...said an extra 10 would get all this extra gun-stuff....

wound up being dang near a rebuild kit for a 1911...only thing missing was the 1911. :)

I bought it today. A little surface rust on the handle, but otherwise appears fine. If y'all thought it was a great deal before, it also included:

RCBS dies for 30-06 and 22-250
1 lb powder unopened; ~ 1 lb opened
~ 150 .224 bullets Game King and Sierra; ~ 100 .308 cal. bullets Sierra
Kinetic puller
Case length gauge
~ 120 large rifle primers
Misc. brass - some corroded so I may just recycle it.
He couldn't find his reloading manuals otherwise he'd have thrown them in also

I don't own rifles in either caliber but have considered getting a .308 or 30-06. This might get expensive.

Yes, I did buy a lottery ticket on the way home.

Owning a set of dies is a good enough reason to buy a gun in that caliber. (Don't ask me how I know!) Even if you don't you might be able to do a swap for ones that you need.

If you get the Lee Classic Turret later there is still a place for a good single stage press. The other tools and accessories will continue to give you service as well.

Sounds like you did well.

Nice find, I am glad you got it. There is nothing wrong with buying a gun as an accessory for reloaading equipment.:)

Mike, do you realize you got the press absolutely free?! All that stuff, even used as it is, would noramlly run 3 times the amount you paid.

I do. I forgot to mention the powder trickler and the small vice. If the lottery ticket hits I'll send the guy a few grand. Ordering some dies and bullets for calibers I have. Can't wait to get started!

And I see that you did. Extremely good deal.

muy bueno senor!

And you better watch it...I have done the same...getting a set of dies and then thinking that a rifle should be purchased to match the dies. :)

A recomendation:

Get the turret as well. Why?-

Use the single stage for load development. Once you have a good load worked up, then you can switch over to the faster press for production runs.
