Are there any significant differences between the new SIG 556 and the plethora of other "Black Rifles"?

Are they just another competitor trying to improve on a design? Or is the Sig 556 a different riflle? (for example M16 vs. AK-47 being different)

thanks

The SIG 556 is more of a refined AR-18 design, from my understanding. While the AR-15 blows gas directly into the bolt carrier group, the SIG uses a gas piston. This keeps heat and carbon fouling isolated in the gas system instead of blowing it back in the reciever. Since the gas tube of the SIG is likely much larger than that of the AR-15, more comparible to that of the AK, actually, this isn't a problem and if you believe what you hear, should help increase the reliability of the SIG in adverse conditions while decreasing the amount of maintence required. I say it is an interesting concept, but still a poodle shooter. I'd love to support SIG for reaching into the civilian market with something as politically risky as a military based semi-automatic rifle, but right now I don't have 12 Benjamins laying around for a poodle shooter. If I did though, it would be the SIG, even with the atrocious handguards.

The SIG uses the gas piston design like an AK. I like the idea. I'm going to wait to let them work out the kinks before I buy one.

I'm going to wait to let them work out the kinks before I buy one.

I wouldn't expect too many kinks since the main functional difference between the new 556 and the well-proven 550 design is an AR-type collapsible stock in place of the 550 folding unit.

I hope you're right about the "not many kinks" thing. I'm still holding fast to my mantra of not buying a gun within 6 months of it arriving on the market.

Sig 556, what it will be or should be: The reliability of a AK, the accuracy of a AR and built like a Swiss watch, what more could you want? With that said I'm very happy with my RRA M4gery. But I'm glad to see Sig jumping into the market(remember all the naysayers about a year ago:neener: ). I'm sure I'll eventually HAVE to get one.

what about the patriot ordnance gas piston system? just found a post about them and they seem interesting if they solve the whole cruding from the gas and such. I've never handled one so I know nothing about them but it might be an option if you want the ar look with with better reliability. heres their site http://www.pof-usa.com/index.htm

Off topic: but is the "poodle shooter" term refer to any .223 black rifle? If so why? Aren't these the same that our boys in Iraq and Afganistan are using? (Or do they use .308s?)

thanks,
cavman

The new civie SIG is a hybrid and isn't like the original military one.
I saw only one of the many contractors in Baghdad carrying a sig.
But, yeah, we shoot the .223/5.56 as well in our M16s/M4s/SAWs.

The contractors could carry anything they wanted and most chose
the M4 as their basic platform. You can do quite an M4gery build
for the price of the new sig.

I already have an M4. Just because I want the Sig doesn't mean I know longer love the M4. I guess when it comes to guns, I'm a happy polygamist.

longhorngunman:

Does your M4gery have all the "proper" M4 stuff like taller front sight tower, spiffynewandimproved feed ramps, etc.?

I just looked at a gen-yoo-ine Colt M4 today and cannot BELIEVE the shop was $1474 for it!:banghead:

RRA calls mine the "entry tactical", couldn't tell you on the sights, but yes it has the cuts in the feed ramp, absolutely love this rifle. Check out www.eaglefirearms.net . RRA has increased their prices since I got mine. I was able to save a good bit by buying the upper and lower separately. If I did it again I'd probably just use a Stag Arms lower, didn't get mine with the rra 2-stage trigger anyhow.
