I have a new model blackhawk 45 lc with a 4'' barrel and i was just wondering if it would be possible to have it shortened to a 2'' inch or somewhere close to that.

I am sure it could be done, but then you would not be able to have the ejector rod and housing and would have to poke out the empties with a pencil or something. Ruger did make a few birds head old Vaqueros with about a 3 inch or so barrel with a shortened ejector rod and housing, but the rod was not long enough to completely shuck out the empties and you usually had to pluck them the rest of the way out by hand.

Along with what gunman said above, such a shrt BH is a pretty darn gauky looking bugger. Lg frame, short bbl...the gripframe is longer than the bbl it's a darn goofy looking atrocity. Seen one. Also gonna lose quite abit from that cartridge too. Gotta ask...why?

barrels

I had one of Ruger birds head vaquero's with the 3 1/4 barrel in 45lc. Man that thing shot great, I loved it, I even carried it CW sometimes, was a very fun gun to shoot and allways got the looks.:D

Why Bother?

I can't understand why you want to butcher up a perfectly good gun when all you need do is buy a Thunder 5 or "Judge". They both fire the 45lc and give you the option of a .410 shotgun shell in the process. If your dealer doesn't have one, they can order them.

http://www.thunder5.com/ "The Judge" is a Taurus and essentially the same gun.

Put the hacksaw down and you won't get hurt. :neener:

Another problem I can see is the front sight. If you retain the standard ramped sight on the little raised platform and make the barrel truly two inches (revolver barrel length is measured from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle), it is going to take up almost the entire space between the front of the frame and the muzzle. As well, the reduced distance between the front and rear sights will likely result in a huge difference in point of impact, possibly beyond the range of the rear sight adjustment. You would need to make a new front sight.

why?

I just thought it would be a good looking gun. and it would be different. im not a fan of most double action snub nose guns. and im one of those people that cant leave things alone i have to modify or do something to make mine different from everyone else. thanx for the replies though. anyone have any idea of what it would cost to have a gun smith shorten the barrel to 2''

You most likely have a 4 3/4" barrel.

Revolver barrels are measured from the face of the cylinder to the muzzle.

And I have to agree, cutting it to 2 3/4" is a very bad idea!

Oh, I don't think Tom did too bad, he correctly deleted the ejector rod housing too. Of course you could have one made like your picture, with a non functioning ejector. That would save you the cost of the frame modification and refinishing, but you would have to pay to have the rod and housing shortened and modified to fit the larger barrel contour. I'd guess $450-550 for shortening and recrowning the barrel, remounting the front sight, new shorter front sight blade, regulating the sights, removing and recontouring the frame where the ejector rod goes in, and refinishing. Maybe $250-300 doing it with the non functioning ejector rod.

You pic ain't giving any sweet dreams to anyone I bet either. :barf:

Sorry, that's fugly. :barf:

Regardless, to each his own...:uhoh:

Maybe check the other thread which you've inquired and asked the exact same thing. Unfortuently for everyone, it's also got the same gut wrenching picture. :barf:

To get what you picture, it's more than just cutting the bbl. So maybe ask your gunsmith? :p He's the one that'll set the price for you to decide on.

I don't think it would look bad with a birdshead grip, If I can find a cheap donor I may build one. Like this with just enough barrel for the front sight. Might look good on a new Vaquero frame.

Heres my Ruger Vaquero shorty (factory). I love it, perfect short barrel for my tastes. I also got a Bisley in 7 1/2 inch barrel to compensate for the short barrel Vaquero though at the same time. :) I wouldn't go any shorter though.

For me, the Ruger Blackhawk with 4 5/8" barrel in .45 Colt, is exactly the right size for my uses out in the boonies. Here is a picture of what I carry when I am out in the mountains, scouting for elk, deer, Black bear seasons. (Yes, I carry a day pack with stuff to get through a couple of nights if need be.)

I'd not care for a shorter, or longer barreled handgun. I don't always carry the rifle, depending on how much climbing I'm going to have to do, but I always carry the Blackhawk .45 Colt.

Where I recreate, there are Mountain lions, Black bears, a few Grizzlies, wolves, and coyotes. Ya just never know.....

Just my choice.

Uh, your gun wouldn't look like you pictured it. Remember, with a two inch barrel the extractor would be gone and that would change the look considerably.

I just can't understand taking a nice pistol like a Blackhawk or a Vaquero and butchering it, but each to his own.

If I had one one I think the only thing I would want to look for is some one who is cutting down an old apple tree. I bet either pistol would look really nice with a nice set of apple-wood grips.
